Please help keep the recycling centers open in KCMO!

Target:
City Council of Kansas City, Missouri
Sponsored by:
The Kansas City Community Recycling Centers, which are operated by the local, non-profit organization, Bridging the Gap, was excluded from the city budget.  With its staff comprised mainly of volunteers, Bridging the Gap has partnered with the City of Kansas City, Missouri for more than 17 years to provide recycling services and environmental education to citizens.  Across the U.S., many cities support recycling drop-off sites as a way to allow all citizens to participate in recycling.  The EPA lists the following as benefits of recycling:
  • Recycling protects and expands U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases U.S. competitiveness.
  • Recycling reduces the need for landfilling and incineration.
  • Recycling prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials.
  • Recycling saves energy.
  • Recycling decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change.
  • Recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.
  • Recycling helps sustain the environment for future generations.
Please sign this petition to encourage Kansas City to continue funding the community recycling centers.

We the undersigned wish to continue city funding for the Kansas City Community Recycling Centers.
Recently, the City of Kansas City, Missouri released the proposed budget for next year.  For the second consecutive year, the Kansas City Community Recycling Centers, which are operated by the local, non-profit organization, Bridging the Gap, was again excluded from the budget.  With its staff comprised mainly of volunteers, Bridging the Gap has partnered with the city for more than 17 years to provide recycling services and environmental education to citizens.  Across the U.S., many cities support recycling drop-off sites as a way to allow all citizens to participate in recycling.  The EPA lists the following as benefits of recycling:

  • Recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.
  • Recycling helps sustain the environment for future generations.
With the recent signing of the Climate Protection Plan, the City of Kansas City, Missouri has made a commitment to the environment.  Even in these difficult fiscal times, the city should continue funding green programs such as the recycling center drop-off sites to show its environmental commitment, to directly engage citizens in becoming involved in environmental programs, to increase community pride, and to attract people to move to this up-and-coming green city.
As concerned citizens, we have signed below to avidly support this environmental program and to encourage the City of Kansas City, Missouri to budget for this program for next year and for years to come.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

My apartment complex does not recycle, so I rely on our recycling centers. This service has enabled me to reduce my household trash to 1 biweekly bag of waste. PLEASE value our recycling centers as I do!

I have always appreciated Kansas City's support of recycling in the past, and have tried to do my part. It makes me feel better about being a consumer, and being involved makes me feel like I am contributing to the city as a whole.

If anything, Kansas City needs more recycling oppurtunities. It's an incredible service that we enjoy curbside recycling in this city and this communicates to visitors that Kansas City is a forward-looking city. Additionally, this is a time when we should be working to further green-up our city. This will put more people to work and help Kansas City maintain a clean and vibrant appearance. Lastly, we need more glass recycling options. We can do this!

The midtown area of KC lost it's recycling collection center. I understand that Home Depot is ready to provide that service but it depends on the funding of Bridging the Gap. Please continue that funding so Midtown residents can be responsible and recycle all that is possible.

Recycling is one of the main ways as individuals we can make a dent in our carbon foot print and feel good about eliminating waste from our landfills. To not have a recycling center in our KC Urban sets us back as a city.

Home Depot Store 3021 has encouraged the recycling center to be located on the north part of their parking lot. This project will benefit the neighborhood and the city, by reducing the amount of city trash pickup.

In Kansas City MO the curbside recycling program that is offered excludes most multi-family buildings. This means the BTG drop offs are the only recycling option for many residents. They are also the only place to recycle glass. Kansas City is already way behind the curve in recycling. cutting funding for recycling drop off will be a big step back for the sustainability of our city.
