Bring proportional representation to Canada

  • by: Britta Hansen

Canada is not the democracy we pride ourselves on. Our archaic electoral system allows for a minority of votes to yield majority governments. A fear of vote splitting forces many of us to vote against our intentions or desires.

There are numerous examples of unfair election results.

It's time for a new system.

We are calling upon our members of parliament, and the Chief Electoral Officer, to change the electoral system to open-list proportional representation. All political parties will benefit from this change.

Some of the benefits of this change include

 - An end to vote splitting
 - Equitable results
 - An end to wasted votes
 - Reduced partisanship
 - Majority governments awarded only to parties receiving a majority of the votes.
 - Increased power to members of the legislative assembly, meaning more government accountability

Over 70 countries already use a form of proportional representation, and 15 are using open-list proportional, including Switzerland, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

Help fix our democracy. Sign now, and send it to a friend.
We the undersigned implore you to change the Canadian electoral system from the archaic first past the post, to one of open-list proportionality. For years voter turnout has been in decline as an increasing number of Canadians become disgruntled with our electoral system. Many fear voting for their true intentions will result in vote splitting or a wasted vote.

The switch to open-list proportionality means a more fair vote, more viable choices for the electorate, a more stable government, and less partisanship. Please, make the switch, for the sake of Canada.

Thank you so much.
