Protection of Street Children is our collective responsibility

Several children are ending up on the streets and due to different many reasons each particuar to a child such Orphanhood, HIV/AIDS, Poverty, Family break up, domestic violence, Neglect, etc.

According to a UNICEF report   of 2005, there were 10,000 street children in Uganda towns of which 89% were boys and 11 girls. This figure is on the increse, there are sever push factors that are still going on, the Police department in Lira reported that in the month of May 2012 alone, there were 98 cases of child neglect, 11 child abuse, 32 of domestic violence and 6 child desertation cases. If in a month cases of such a magnitude are reported, how about those not reported?

On the streets  they are victimised, beaten, killed, tortured, stigmatised and used as labourers. This must stop. Street Children just as any other children and persons haved got rights. Street children phenomenon it itself constitute a grave human rights violations such as right to life, survival , developemnt, the right to be cared for and protected by parents and the state, right of protection from all forms of physical and mental violence, injury, neglect, abuse, neglect, maltreatment, etc.
It is therefore important that everyone irrespective of who we are should rise up stand up for children's rights, speak for them, report cases of child abuse, guide and counsel children and their caregivers, Leaders should play their roles.
