For the past few years, car enthusiasts from across Long Island have been gathering on Thursday nights at the parking lot on Montauk Highway in Oakdale. Everyone gathered to share in the hobby, show off their cars, and meet with others in the community.
That is, until recently. When people arrived at the parking lot on Thursday, May 1, 2008, they were greeted by a police presence and message that they were no longer welcome.
It has been reported that a patron of the Best Yet supermarket in the shopping center had complained about the amount of cars in the parking lot, and not being able to find a parking space. The landlord of the property acted on this information by informing the police.
We are calling for your support as we look to contact the landlord to inform them that we would like the lot to be again open to the car community. Most of the car show participants were regular patrons of many of the shops in the shopping center, including Wendys, Oakdale Pizzeria and the aforementioned supermarket, Best Yet.

For the past few years, we, the members of the local car enthusiasts community, have been participating in a weekly meet in the parking lot of Lighthouse Commons Shopping Center in Oakdale, New York. These meets would take place on Thursday evenings in the warm weather.
Recently, though, we learned that we were no longer welcome to congregate there and share in our enthusiasm for classic cars. This is most unfortunate. Not just for the car enthusiast community, but also to the stores in the center that benefited from the hundreds of patrons who would shop in those stores on a weekly basis.
We, the undersigned, implore you to reconsider your decision to ban the weekly car show, and to allow us to resume meeting in the lot and continue to enjoy the shopping center.

It is ashame when people in life like to ruin a good thing. The car show brought people of all ages to have a good time. And it also brought a lot of business to the oakdale area. Well I hope they are happy when they see business slows down - maybe when we dont shop in that center anymore they will get the point!

I have been an avid goer of the car show - it was something nice to do with my daughter since their is not much fun stuff left to do on the island. I also feel that it brought a lot of business to the shopping center. For example, i would have never known about the karate school and i happen to be at the car show and that is how i found out. There is never any trouble when i go and it happens to be a nice weekly outing for my daughter and I. All the other car shows left are lame and it was nice to see some nice muscle cars for a change!!. Please bring the car show back! It is a great place for families to go and enjoy seeing some great cars!!

We here have loved the car show in Oakdale for the past few years now its become a tradition in its own right. It brings the people around from everywhere who share one common interest...cars, plain and simple. The local businesses love it as well for they benefit with the crowds of spectators that come by to see the show. This should not be shut down just because one spoke up, but now hear us and take light of the situation and just do the right thing and give the people what they want the most. The car show. Yes, the sole blame for the demise of the Oakdale Car Show goes to: The Gym in the shopping center known as - Bodies@Work I have confirmed from several reliable sources that the proprietor of this gym has made the complaints that ended the Car Show... A Boycott of this establishment & spread of word through word-of-mouth is in order... I know many family members & friends who are taking up this banner!

This was a great cruise night. My favorite. Great quality cars. Stores for the ladies to shop & buy. Wendys, Pizza etc for all. I know it is good for business for the one night a week (weather providing). A great crowd of orderly and respectful car people. Please bring it back. Sincerely Joe Bonomo

This has been going since I was a teenager I'm now 65 years old and still looking for a place to gather with my friends with our cars. But then again this is Long Island.Its a shame that the people involved don't come out and see the look on the kids faces when they see a car they like or the older people reminiscing of the days when they had a car like that.WE may not be invited in Oakdale anymore but You can never take away the smiles or the impression that was made on the younger generation.Nuf said Ed

I have been attending the car shows for some time and i never saw anyone acting anything but respectful towards patrons of the shopping center. Never saw any drinking of alchohol, drugs or any type of immature behavior. Please bring back the car show and give us a place where mature citizens can meet, admire each others cars and act responsively

Went tonight No Police when I got there. Only about 3 dozen cars maybe 15 bikes. What's wrong with people these days. This is a Family orientated gathering and it's free. I'll be back next week too.

This is a nice place to go on a Thursday evening for families. The majority of businesses in the shopping center are in favor of the cars and people being there as they spend $$$ at their store.

RE-OPEN THE SHOW!! It was one of the small & basic pleasures of the community that was both peaceful & fun for all... Classic Car owners, Families, Kids, all had something cool to do on a Thursday night... It's alright, kill off another piece of "Americana", lets do better & build plastic condos over the site, $4 a gallon gas, it's what all Long Island is equating to anyway.. Jeez

My husband and I have been riding our Motorcycles to this Thursday evening event for years. People behave respectfully and there are never any problems. This is the best group gathering of enthusiests on Long Island. It's not a new thing people know the parking lot gets full. What a shame that a few complaints can cause this gathering to end. I am deeply saddened by this.
