Stop filling our oceans with plastic waste!

Many people are unaware of the huge amount of plastic Americans throw away every day, or how much of it goes in the ocean.
Americans throw away 2 million beverage bottles every five minutes, and that's not including things like shampoo, soap, and food, along with thousands of other things, that are packaged in plastic. Most of this plastic makes its way into the ocean, forming what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and area of floating plastic waste twice the size of Texas where there is 6 times more plastic than plankton.
The risks are many: the plastic waste absorbs toxins and gets eaten by birds and fish, which in turn allows it to enter our food chain. Plastic is not biodegradable either - all plastic that has been created is still on the earth - most likely floating around in the ocean, or in our rivers and streams, which ultimately lead there.
In signing this petition, you are asking our president to do five things:

1: Educate people on plastic waste in the ocean and the benefits of recycling, and encourage less plastic waste
2: Approve laws that restrict the amount of plastic used in packaging, and rewarding companies who use environmentally savvy methods to package their products
3: Implement more recycling plans and programs that make it easier to recycle
4: Devote more money to research in finding alternatives to plastic
5: Prevent plastic waste from making its way into the ocean

Please help us reduce the amount of plastic waste Americans generate and throw in the ocean!
*Even if you do not live in the US, please sign! The oceans belong to the world!
We the undersigned are genuinely concerned about the welfare of our oceans, and have been watching with growing dread at the accumulation of waste, primarily plastic, which has been accumulating in our oceans. Not only does this pose countless threats to wildlife, but the plastic also absorbs toxins, so that when it is eaten by fish, it risks our food chain as well.
We believe that this is a very important issue that needs to be addressed not only by our government, but also by the people, and not just of America, but the world as well. After considering the plastic waste generated and dumped in the ocean, we respectfully ask you to take the following steps in keeping plastic waste from ending up in the ocean:

1: Educate people on plastic waste in the ocean and the benefits of recycling, and encourage less plastic waste.
2: Approve laws that restrict the amount of plastic used in packaging, and rewarding companies who use environmentally savvy methods to package their products.
3: Implement stricter recycling plans and programs that make it easier to recycle, thus saving resources and keeping it from reaching the ocean.
4: Devote more money to research in finding alternatives to plastic that are biodegradable.
5: Prevent plastic waste from making its way into the ocean (Or into rivers and streams, which ultimately lead there).

These things will not only greatly help the environment, but will also help us, as an American people and citizens of the world, to move forward. We believe that these are important steps in not only reducing the impact on the environment made by today's disposable products, but also in reducing our oil dependancy: plastic is, after all, a petroleum product.
