Rights for pet birds.

I put together this petition because of a recent event regarding someone setting thier pet birds free. I sat here in tears because I got so frustrated with not only the person who did it but also my local Animal Control. Birds are not included in the Animal Welfare Act here and I want to try to change that. We can all be the voices for not only the birds released but all birds facing this and other abusive situations.
I also want to add that I will also be sending pictures of my birds who I adopted from a rescue along with the stories of abuse they endured before they were rescued. I think that will have a big impact also. I thank all of you for signing this.
We the undersigned feel strongly about a need for change in the Animal welfare act in South Carolina. Today pet birds are not included in this act and we don't understand why. I myself can tell you from experience that birds are just as much a part of the family as any dog or cat are. Recently I had to call Animal Control to report someone releasing their pet birds into the wild because they no longer wanted them. I was in total shock when I was told there was nothing they could do as it is not illegal to do that. First and foremost, there is no way that birds not native to here can survive in the wild. Secondly, if the said bird has diseases are you not concerened for our native birds? Last but not least in any way, we feel it is a very immoral thing to do. People need to be held accountable for the things they do to their pets otherwise things like this will just continue. I'm pretty sure if someone had a different kind of exotic animal like a Tiger and set it free that there would be consequences. Just because a bird is not deadly in the Tiger sense does not make it any less wrong. It could still be deadly as far as spreading diseases. We are asking you to please add birds to the Animal Welfare act.
