Lucy the Elephant is currently at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. She needs to be sent to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. The small space and cold climate that Lucy has to endure is not right. The sanctuary in Tennessee has more than 2700 acres. Lucy is also living by herself at the zoo. At the sanctuary she will be among many of her own kind. An elephant biologist diagnosed that Lucy is suffering from chronic arthritis and foot problems (a leading cause of death in zoo elephants). As well she is lethargic and exhibiting pronounced stereotypic behaviours, such as swaying and rocking, typically a sign of frustration, boredom and stress. Lucy also has a misplaced molar in her mouth that is pressing on her sinuses.

Edmonton Alberta . The city brass keeps repeating it is the best city in North America due to the money oil brings. But they do not respect humans in Edmonton. City cops kills defenseless people point blank, Three drunks in the last three years shot dead by cops. How can they make an animal suffer. Well. the oil. In Edmonton the only subject of discussion is work and money and how they are the best in Canada. Alberta is the only province in Canada that wanted to go to war in Irak,. They care about thet elephant, No! they do not. Edmonton's Mayor and City Council are only thinking about the monetary gains that Lucy brings to their inadequate zoo - shame on them. Small enclosure, no enrichment, she is bored silly, she is lonely and she needs to go to be with a social family network at a sanctuary. Lucy will die at this zoo - alone. And then they will just replace her with another unlucky elephant. Look how long it took the caretakers in Alaska to give Maggie the freedom she so deserved - 10 years. Lucy will never know a moment of true freedom - because the city of Edmonton is never going to allow her to leave. Her death will be on their heads. Again - shame on them.

It is sad that our society treats criminals better than this innocent elephant. How many criminals receive indefinite sentences without eligibility for parole, to be served mostly in solitary confinement? That's almost unheard of, so why is it ok to do it to Lucy? Breaks my heart.

I grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and spent alot of time at the Valley Zoo. I am disappointed and disgusted that they are being so negligent with Lucy. If you really care for and love this elephant then let her go.....she would be a very changed individual to be at the sanctuary....is that a bad thing.....why not do what is in the best interest of Lucy and what you can do for her and her well being....she has been a possession and paid the price for being in your locale which probably doesn't help her arthritis....Let her live out the rest of her life as an elephant with her own kind....How would you feel to be alone with no one for the rest of your days.....Have a heart......and do the right thing for her.donna j archer

Clearly, Lucy is exhibiting signs that she is not mentally or physically doing well in the environment at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. If the people caring for her are truly looking out for her welfare, and not their pocketbooks...I hope they will have her transferred to a sanctuary to live out her senior years in comfort.

I'm from the Chicago area. A few years ago, our Lincoln Park Zoo was in a similar situation...with calls from activists and the public to move their three elephants to TES. Lincoln Park zoo declined. All three elephants died. How many times must zoos continue to learn this lesson? Please do what is right for Lucy. You have no reason not to.

I have never been to the zoo that i can remember but I know that a poor animal living there all it`s life is not how i would imagine a life for any animal. I really think Lucy needs more space for herself. how could you not care about that adorable creature.

Lucy NEEDS to have a better life! My visit to the zoo was so disturbing, I couldn't believe how little the zoo has done to enrich her life! She was rocking back and forth in the corner of her tiny indoor pen. Now during this cold winter, Lucy is confined inside and with her severe arthritis has to stay on the cold cement enclosures. Lucy's feet were made to stomp on soft grassy ground! PLEASE sent her to the elephant sanctuary. You say this is a risk to her life... but denying her a chance to live a happy retirement is torture... Zoos are meant to teach preservation of life... let's preserve Lucy's life, and let her be with other elephants in Tennessee!!! Thank you
