Laquanda Taylor, Texas
This letter is on the behalf of my family and the matter of my brother health as well as his safety. LaStarzic Taylor inmate #631479 Polunsky Unit Livingston, Texas. A visually impaired offender who carries a blind stick under the, “Physically handicapped Offenders Program/Adaptive Disability Services (PHOP/ADS).” In the federal computer he is listed as legally blind, my brother is also under the “Mental Health Mental Retardation (MHMR),’’ for psyche, to which are his disabilities. A Brittle Diabetic with High Blood pressure and Asthma. The nature of my problem is the present problems of my brother’s health, and his safety. During my visit in August I was made aware of his health problems, since LaStarzic was brought to the Plounsky Unit he has became really ill. Constantly vomiting and diarrhea, not able to hold food down. This makes it difficult for him to take his insulin. I was told upon his visit to the infirmary the nurse on duty did not want to assist him because he had on his blind glasses. After explaining to her that the light was bothering his eyes. Even though he has a legal right to wear the glasses in doors. While lying on the disgusting bathroom floor in the infirmary suffering in serious pain. The nurse told him that it was not anything she could do or give him for his stomach problems. After learning this and seeing how sick he looked during our visitation I made Warden Lester aware of my problem and concern for my brother’s health and the actions of the nurse. I was told he would investigate the matter. Which was not true, my brother ended up so sick he had to be rushed to the hospital. His stomach problem became much worse, they found traces of blood in his urine. Blood in urine is a sign of a serious problem in the urinary tract. Where it shows his diabetes has been poorly controlled, and on a very low carbohydrate diet, poor nutrition. And I believe if Warden Lester did his job and took my concerns more serious my brother wouldn’t have suffered that long before getting the proper treatment. Again my concerns are for my brother’s health this is an ongoing problem. The nurses and staff at the Estelle Unit did not properly care for LaStarzic’s health which resulted in him to make several trips to the hospital, and now only being at the Polunsky Unit for only a few months the same problems are continuing. And now to find out Dr. Zond is altering my brother’s insulin intact from three times daily to twice a day, which makes him very sick. My brother needs to be moved to a unit where his health is taking serious, a unit where his health is monitored properly by a Diabetic Specialists. I received a letter from my brother explaining why and when his insulin has been reduced. I have a copy of a Step 1 Life Endangerment filed on 8-18-2009. On 8-17-09, he did not get his noon or p.m. insulin shot. When Officers came to work on 2nd shift, he told them he hadn't had his insulin shot, and that he was sick, (at this time it was 6:05p.m.) At 7:00 p.m. while the officer was doing his rounds he asked did he call the Nurse. He told him he had, and the nurse said she would be over. At 8:30p.m. nurse Eppy showed up, and told him that it was an order written in his chart to only give him one shot a day, and even though she know he been getting three shots a day, because of the order that's why the nurse hadn't given him noon or p.m. insulin shots, but she would try to get it straight in the morning. Then left without even doing a blood sugar check, though he told her he was sick. On 8-18-09, at approximately 3:45a.m., nurse Eppy came to 11 building to give him his morning insulin shot. While giving him his shot she explained to him that she called Dr. Zond and he told her that he wrote an order to only give my brother one shot a day. With him learning this news he asked nurse Eppy if he was to file a Life Endangerment on doctor Zond considering he is going against the DMS Doctor, Martha Norris, orders to whom which that my brother see on Tele-Med for his Diabetes, and who put him on Lantus insulin with a 3 times a day sliding scale insulin regimen to which is suppose to cover his meals in take throughout the day. She said do what you feel is necessary. My brother has been on Lantus insulin, plus a 3 times a day sliding scale regimen, since he have been placed on Lantus insulin back in the early part of 2008, because of how bad my Diabetes has gotten, and have been taking his insulin shots like this up until doctor Zond has written this order to place him on one shot a day. As of right now his kidneys have been hurting him, and his blood sugar is out of control. He is reduced to only eating one meal a day which is breakfast when he gets his one insulin shot and snacking periodical whenever he feels his blood sugar seems low. We would like to know what since does it make for doctor Zond to reduce his sliding scale shots from 3 times a day to once, knowing that he is a Brittle Diabetic with out of control blood sugars and a 10.7% AIC? He was told by his DMS doctor that he was spilling over 2200 units of protein out of his kidneys, and is 800 units away of becoming a person on Dialysis. Because of doctor Zond's orders to reduce his sliding scale insulin down to once a day, and him becoming sick more now on a daily basis, we believe doctor Zond has made him more of a higher risk for Kidney failure, and to which has put him at a higher risk for DYING. All someone has to do is check his blood sugar flow sheet to see that his blood sugars are out of control. So what since would it make for doctor Zond to take him off his 3 times a day sliding scale regimen. We ask for him to be placed back on 3 times a day sliding scale insulin regimenan, and that doctor Zond not be allowed to alter his insulin shot orders from that the DMS Doctor, Martha Norris to whom he sees for his Diabetes. If not, we ask for him to be transferred to another unit. Thank you for your time and help. |
