NYS Dairy Farm Families are experiencing the worst financial crises in decades. Facing 1970's prices for milk while carrying 2009 expenses, they are on the verge of collapse.
Higher costs of doing business in NYS as a result of excessive taxes, regulation and rising energy costs, importation of milk protein concentrate from China and other countries (with little or no tariffs and lower health inspection requirements), as well as federal milk pricing policies that hurt the Northeast must be reversed.
If these threats are unchecked, our state will see the elimination of traditional family farms in NYS, destabilization of upstate and rural economies, loss of agricultural land engaged in sustainable production, decreased food security and food safety as a result of over-dependence on imports, and a larger carbon footprint for the production of food and fiber as consumers pay higher transportation costs to ship food and food products to NYS.
We have lost manufacturing overseas, we are reliant on foreign oil, we are now in debt to many of these outside countries.
We do not want to give up our local food supply!
We desperately urge immediate financial relief and long term changes in public policy to support our family farms before it's too late!

The general public does not realize how much money farm equipment costs! A USED hay baler can cost $10,000! Tractors can cost $60,000 or more! Not to mention the day-to-day supplies that a farm needs to run. PLEASE HELP OUR FARMERS!! Thank You!

I grew up as as a farm girl on my parents' farm. It is such a good way for children to learn responsibility, to appriciate animals, and a wholesome way of life. We didn't have time for temptations that ensnare the inactive young people of today. It bonded our family together. We each got our allowance as a % of the monthly milk check. Our country needs the security that farming offers, the independence of using our own land wisely, and the natural beauty of farm environment.

Dairy farmers are part of New York's heritage and New York's communities. We need a stronger and sustained public campaign to get the word out and build support. This is a crisis that touches all New Yorkers.

We need to keep the farms running here in NYS and here in America, and stop bringing food from other countries. Stop making the hard working farmers pay to produce our food for us.

We need to keep our local farmers, supporting local agriculture and reducing the carbon footprint resulting from bringing our food long distances. All of our children's and grandchildren's future depends on it.

No Reason in the world to import milk or any milk products from anywhere especially China!

We need to support our local farmers. Where do you think milk is going to come from if all the dairy farmers close their doors? Do you really want to drink artificial milk produced in China? Think about their future as well as your own.

I want my nephew to be able to have a family farm left when he is able to be a partner! Lets pull it together and do something about this!!

Farmers are the infrastructure of America, they should be considerered above bridges, roads, hospitals. America wasnt always the bread basket of the world.

I think it is important that our political system recognizes the importance of our dairy farmers and farmers in general. There should be funding available to our farmers to secure their livelihood and for the proper care of the animals they raise.

It's terrible that our local dairy farms have been operating at a financial loss for so long. I want a system that nurtures and sustains them. Small family farms are more likely to be owned and worked by people who feel a deep connection to the land and will do what they can to use it sustainably. I would like to always buy dairy products made from locally produced milk. I fear that they will all be forced out of business and the land will go to developers.

Largest problem here is lack of healthy competition in trading, from milk companies/coops up through retailers. The system that does not allow for healthy competition is destined to become a lumbering monopoly type system. No one wins here, except perhaps the folks at the top. The more players there are the more the liklihood that "true" market price can be realized.

Dear Gov. Paterson and Legislators--Stop pandering on this issue and for once stand up for New York dairy farmers. Do you remember that Agriculture is our No. 1 industry in NYS? Other states have actually taken steps to help their dairy producers but New York as usual is lagging behind. That being said, we hear all this banter from Albany about our economic woes in NY and yet we do nothing for our dairy farmers who are literally in financial ruin! Well here's an idea--let's get the dairy farmers some much needed pricing reform and help boost our upstate and rural economy! AND while you are at it, let's investigate why the farmers are still paying for the hauling to the plant. It's unfair and needs to be addressed as well. It is very clear that this industry needs an overhaul badly. The million dollar question is... will our elected government officials take a stand on this issue and do what is right here or allow this unfair & antiquated pricing system to continue to work against producers until they are all gone? Please do your homework on this issue and support our dairy farmers on this one! Thank you Assemblyman Lopez, Assemblyman Crouch, and other NY legislators that have supported our NY dairy producers. Sincerely, Jennifer Sienko

Keeping our farms may be more important than most people realize. This is our food. Personal friends have lost their farms and are in financial ruin. They have no money to spend to support our economy, thus hurting other businesses. It is a continuous cycle that must be changed. Our government has bailed out others that are not as important as our food. We must stop supporting other countries when we cannot support ourselves adequately. Thank you.
