Save New York's Dairy Farm Families!

Target:
Governor Paterson & Albany Legislative Leaders
Governor Paterson and Albany Legislative Leaders:

NYS Dairy Farm Families are experiencing the worst financial crises in decades.  Facing 1970's prices for milk while carrying 2009 expenses, they are on the verge of collapse.

Higher costs of doing business in NYS as a result of excessive taxes, regulation and rising energy costs, importation of milk protein concentrate from China and other countries (with little or no tariffs and lower health inspection requirements), as well as federal milk pricing policies that hurt the Northeast must be reversed.

If these threats are unchecked, our state will see the elimination of traditional family farms in NYS, destabilization of upstate and rural economies, loss of agricultural land engaged in sustainable production, decreased food security and food safety as a result of over-dependence on imports, and a larger carbon footprint for the production of food and fiber as consumers pay higher transportation costs to ship food and food products to NYS.

We have lost manufacturing overseas, we are reliant on foreign oil, we are now in debt to many of these outside countries.

We do not want to give up our local food supply!

We desperately urge immediate financial relief and long term changes in public policy to support our family farms before it's too late!

You will only realize the importance on this issue, when we rely on other countries to feed us. That's where we are heading.

Our farm has been in the family since 1723. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but it seems that the small family farm is threatened more now than ever. Why does no one care any more? Politicians are so far from reality. The way they act, I am not sure if many of them know what a cow looks like let alone how a farm operates. This is our food supply they are playing games with. Some day it will haunt us. We have the greatest and cheapest food supply in the world, but for how much longer?

Just moved from Michigan. Picked Schoharie County because we wanted to be in farm country. Hope the farms are still here in 10-20 years.

I strongly support any government actions which will save and protect our valuable farms and the food networks they supply. I also support the federal inquiry into the milk industry monopolization.

Please help the dairy farmers in NYS. If we have no farmers, we have no cows and then we have no milk.
