Relief arrives for 101 dogs living in squalid conditions. One of the most horrific cases of neglect and animal cruelty was witnessed by the RSPCA and police who raided Waterford Boarding Kennels and Cattery, South of Brisbane on January 2008.

SAVE OUR ANIMALS! BAN PUPPY MILLS IN AUSTRALIA

Target:
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
Sponsored by:

I am from the state of Victoria and watched the news a year ago where 101 poodles and other dogs had been neglected within a breeding establishment. My heart aches for the dogs and hopefully those that have survived, are progressing since being in the great care of the RSPCA?  It deeply saddens me that the poor dogs have been exploited by being used as breeding machines and confined to small, dirty spaces in order to fill the greedy puppy farmers pockets for the $.

All of the dogs were in poor condition, with matted fur clotted with urine and faeces, ear infections, and some infested with maggots. From this occurrence, I am so against puppy farming or back yard breeding as you could call it, which are popping up everywhere all over the country, unnoticed, and not monitored strictly by local and animal welfare authorities.

Sadly purebred puppies or x breeds are produced in massive numbers.  The female dogs are forced to breed back to back, with very little rest between litters. Unfortunately the dogs live in conditions that are inhumane, lacking in quality food and shelter, little veterinary care, overcrowded cages, little freedom to roam, and needing love by humans. The puppies are then sold directly either to pet shops, via the Internet or newspaper advertisements within Australia.

Now is the time to fight against inhumane puppy mills.

I cannot stress the importance of introducing stricter laws relating to animal welfare in this country and want to help put an end to puppy mills and other inhumane animal farms. By abolishing puppy mills, there will certainly be a decrease in unwanted pets and overcrowded shelters. It just breaks my heart to see so many pictures of animals living in anguish.

More devastating, I came across yahoo 7 members room and was totally horrified what I read. Sadly one member commented that unfortunately they had to put their German Sheppard down because they had temporally placed their dog in the care of the same Boarding Kennel that the 101 dogs were rescued from (which legally I cannot name), whilst in the process of moving to WA. My wish is for authorities to look into the matter further and stop inhumane puppy farming.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Save our animals from imprisonment and cruelty and allow them the opportunity to live a wonderful life.

So please join in the fight to ban puppy mills by signing my petition today!

We the undersigned,
request that you ban all puppy farming of poor quality in Australia. It is also our wish that procedures and practices are implemented to strictly monitor all breeders, groomers, kennels and catteries in Australia by the appropriate authorities.

Unfortunately the recent raids by the RSPCA and police in QLD where 101 dogs were seized, is a very sad and devesting example of inhumane, unregistered breeders and boarding kennels. All of the dogs were in poor condition, with matted fur clotted with urine and faeces, ear infections, and some infested with maggots.

Is this what Australia should be seen as?  We are those poor animals voices.  Our furry friends did not asked to live in conditions that are inhumane, lacking in quality food and shelter, little veterinary care, over crowded cages and little freedom to roam and be loved by humans. The puppies did not ask to be sold directly either to pet shops, via the Internet or newspaper ads within Australia and overseas. All animals have a right be loved and have space to roam.

NOW IS THE TIME!

Please ban all puppy farming or back yard breeding as you could call it, which is not monitored strictly by local and animal health authorities.

Save our animals from imprisonment and inhumane cruelty and allow them the opportunity to live a wonderful life. You can make a difference.

No civilized society could condone this; puppy mills, live animal sale at pet shops, all must stop.

i think what these animals go through is sick. i couldnt imagine living in half a square metre for all my life. not being able to turn around or run. to sleep in my own urine until i am scoulded by it, to bite every inch of my skin, it be fed mouldy food, to live with dead rooting family, to have ticks and infections. it saddens me to see animals fully grown dogs that should be running around in the backyard living on wire from birth till death never been able to touch the floor. i want to do more, i feel i cant. the court gave the okay for people who were involved with puppies mills to continue breeding, no charges. i am only 15 and i no that is not right. it is unbearable, but not unstoppable.

Dear Mr Rudd, Thousands of dogs are destroyed every year in Australia simply because they were unable to find homes. Puppy mills only add to this problem and increase the amount of unwanted dogs killed each year, they are also sickeningly cruel to both the breeding animals and the pups. Please put an end to this cruel 'farming'. Enough is enough.

We run a small rescue from home and are approached every week as the last chance for many pounds and desperate people. The amount of dogs being euthanised is something that needs to be looked at. There are too many rescue groups contantly over run with many more dogs being put to sleep due to over exhausted resources. This situation is not set to improve without some action from the state and national government focusing on mandatory sterilisation and an abolishment of back yard breeders and puppy mills.

it is a national - no a universal shame that we have taken the beauty of companionship forged from our relationship with canines to the unspeakable level of commodities and profit. To manipulate and control the unconditional love that dogs are ready and willing to give to us for financial gain is wrong at such a fundamental level, we should be so ashamed of ourselves to let it get so out of hand. The people of Australia and the wider world have voiced their dismay over the institution of puppy mills, we look now to our government to outlaw them. Indeed, puppy breeding as a whole is flawed when so many unwanted animals are produced and euthanased.

I would like to see the government introduce far stricter rules for pet ownership overall. It is my opinion that licensing should be sought before animal acquisition is allowed. We must prove ourselves capable guardians when seeking to obtain a human infant, why should it be so different for non-humans? Animals live and die according to our desires and whims.. and that is simply not acceptable... more worth should be given to animals, particuarly (but not exclusively) to those we deem as "pets".

It deeply saddens me the inhumane treatment of these animals. I can not believe that anyone would think that it is OK to breed animals back to back. How cruel!!!! It is time to start monitoring and enforcing stricter laws!!!!

Puppy Mills should be baned alltogether, why put poor puppies through an ordeal like that when thousands and thousands of puppies are put down every year in Australia. Why not help the poor little buggers that are waiting for homes, rather then buying from these discusting people that do it for greed. We need to be their voice!!!!

With so many healthy animals being euthanized here in America as well as Australia, this must be stopped! Australia has been a champion for animal rights and I applaud their fine people for doing all they do.

In the UK, pet shops are banned from selling cats and dogs which has helped cut this awful trade down. Lets do the same for our own animals. I made the mistake of buying from a pet shop. While I love my little dog, it wasn't until we got our second dog from a registered breeder that I could see the faults in temperament and physicality that hadn't been cared for in our first dog.

These places are just so disgusting it makes me sick. I've been an RSPCA volunteer for over a year and have seen lots of dogs as the direct result of puppy mills. Some dogs are so badly bred their bodies have so many things wrong with them, including things such as malformed legs. There must be a stop to this disgusting so called business. Who makes these minimum requirement laws anyway????? How would they like to be stuffed into a cage with the same requirements that these dogs have?

Why must humans continue to use animals like machines.... just to make money. Not something I would expect from Australia.

Please stop this inhumane act! It is so very distressing and i cannot imagine how awful it would be for these beautiful animals. Dogs give unconditional love and they dont deserve this act of pure evil. Theyre not a toy they are living creatures that we should all be blessed to have on this earth. Please please please put a end to this!

How are puppy mills still legal in this country?? I am deeply saddened and disappointed. The public must speak out on behalf of these poor creatures and bring this dreadful, shameful business out into the open. I will never shop at a pet store that sells live animals EVER AGAIN!!

All dogs have the right to a life free from cruelty and the indignity of "farming" them for the purposes of breeding. Not only are there too many dogs in the world, this is an extremely cruel and unnecessary way of producing dogs to be placed in pets shops at the mercy of impulse shoppers.

There are already far too many animals euthanased by pet shelters and local councils each year because they are stray and unwanted. Why on earth are these puppy farms allowed to continue operating for this reason alone? That some of them treat their animals so badly is reprehensible. Our laws are way too soft. Prosecute these people to the full extent of the law and close down their businesses for good please!

Puppy farming involves dogs being treated like battery chickens in cramped, unstimulating, comfortless conditions. The puppies are produced without testing for genetic diseases and are sold without being desexed so the pet overpopulation problem is further exacerbated. Do not buy pet shop puppies as they generally come from puppy farms.

i think it is disgusting what they are doing to these poor animals. They didnt choose this life for themselves and the people that mistreat animals should be put in the situation that they put these animals in. They must be stopped

I work in an Animal Shelter & have seen first hand the condition of Puppies & Dogs that have come from Pet Shops & Puppy Farms. Over 250,000 healthy Dogs & Cats are Euthanased every year in our Great Country, why are we allowing people to mass produce for profit. Have you ever held an animal whilst it is being Euthanased? I have & want the endless killing to stop!

am a cat person myself, and know this happens to them as well, but this should not be happening to any animal. the sooner the govt bans backyard breeding by anyone other than a registered breeder, the better.
