SAVE OUR SUMMER
One Small Week - A Huge Difference
WE NEED YOUR VOICE!
The early start date is too early!
School classrooms are sweltering hot.
Teachers and students are suffering.
LAUSD needs to know that we care about our students.
We want a school start date of August 20th 2013
August 13th is too early, too hot, and too unreasonable.
LAUSD needs to compromise! One small week will make a huge difference.

One small week still allows students to end the first semester before winter break.
One small week still ends school in the beginning of June offering graduates time for college entrances, college family visits, and college vacations.
One small week still provides the benefits of an early start on AP information before the grueling exams at the end of May.
For most schools in Southern California the school year starts anywhere from the third week of August to after Labor Day. We are only asking to push the school start date later by one small week, which would mean that school would begin on August 20th and would end on June 7th. We would still have the same number of instructional days of school. The August 20th date will have all of the same advantages as the early start date of August 13th….One small week will make a huge difference.
One small week will make a huge difference by benefiting our incoming seniors.
Multiple studies prove the necessity of mental health. The need to balance time effectively is crucial. Studies have proven the enormous stress level between junior and senior year. Students overloading AP courses in their junior year use the summer to enroll in strong community service jobs as well as important college summer school classes.
The 2013 August 20th start date allows the up and coming seniors to attend essential competitive SAT and college personal statement workshops and tutoring. Community Service and College courses begin in the middle June and end in the beginning of August, leaving approximately one week before school orientations. There is simply no time left! There is no time for the stressful preparation of the SAT if one participates in courses or community service. Why does LAUSD deny our students time to prepare during the most stressful time of their educational career? One small week does make a difference.
One small week will make a huge difference by benefiting our Kindergarten through 8th graders as well! Since the elementary and middle school students do not have the same concerns and constraints as high school students, the August 20th date offers these children one more week of the very important down time that summer provides. They too can engage in summer school activities without the stress of school beginning on top of finishing studies. They too are affected by the scorching heat waves that led countless classes outside, attempting to ease the stifling heat of a classroom that had no air conditioning.
One small week can save LAUSD large sums of money in the long run. One less week of using and fixing air conditioning in the heat of summer is more money saved for our schools. Putting in air conditioning units in countless classrooms will skyrocket those costs.
LAUSD spent over $400,000.00 fixing air conditioners that broke during the first week of school!
