Teachers and parents are speaking out
Start schools on August 22nd
Voice your choice!
Last December Pali High teachers took a vote and were given three calendar start date options: to begin school on September 6th, to begin school on August 14th, or if the complex changed as a whole, to begin school on August 22nd.
The teachers voted, and in order to keep families together, their choice was to begin with the complex, which includes, Palisades Elementary, Marquez Elementary, Canyon Elementary, Kenter Elementary, Topanga Elementary, Paul Revere Middle School, and Palisades Charter High School. The teachers are still hopeful that this complex will change to August 22nd.
Therefore, teachers and parents from the complex are petitioning to begin school on a date that works for the elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. They are showing their overwhelming support for a start date of August 22nd. Parents and teachers are reaching out and speaking out to change the date for our complex and begin school on August 22nd instead of August 14th.
This change to August 22nd would align our complex with the majority of the state, public, and independent schools, including the Santa Monica/Malibu district, who are already successfully beginning their school year on August 22nd.
By beginning on August 22nd:
-The semester will end before winter break allowing students to take finals before vacation.
-Summer will begin at the end of the first week of June, allowing students to participate in enrichment programs, sports camps, or college summer school, while still having time off in August to prepare for the SAT's and develop college personal statements.
-Students still have an extended amount of time to learn AP curiculum prior to the AP exams.
-Winter Break can be two or three weeks, and Spring Break can be one or two weeks depending on the internal school calendar decision.
-Since the elementary and middle school students do not have the same concerns and constraints as high school students, the August 22nd date offers these families time to enjoy more of the warm August summer month together.
-Our complex would join the Santa Monica/Malibu district as well as the majority of public and private schools in the state of California.
-August 22nd offers all of the same benefits as August 14th and more.
-August 22nd provides time to build family values.
-August 22nd ensures our children a strong education
-August 22nd meets all our needs.
If school does not change to August 22nd:
-School will commence on August 14th, high school orientation will take place on August 6th, and high school sports programs will begin August 6th .
-All academic, sport, and enrichment summer camps will be cut short.
-School will end on June 1st, earlier than most schools and before enrichment camps and college summer school begins.
-Students involved in summer programs will not have any time for SAT preparation, or college admission letter writing.
-Between all of these enrichment and sports activities, starting school before August 22nd will leave students no time for mental health.
We need LAUSD's support to help mandate this calendar change for our complex.
We need LAUSD to provide transportation for our students.
Help us let Steve Zimmer, LAUSD Board Member, know how we feel!
Help change the calendar for the entire complex. We need everyone’s support.
