Save Spencer Park, Newport RI

Save Spencer Park, Newport RI

Target:
Department of Utilities Newport RI, Julie Forgue
Sponsored by:

Located between Wellington Ave and Narragansett Ave, this small neighborhood park was once an inlet to Narragansett bay.  The proposed 6 million gallon underground tank would destroy our park and its 25 trees, and cause constant flooding to the dig site and neighborhood.  We believe this holding tank will not eliminate the overflow of stormwater concerns or solve the problem of the cities sewage pipes and pumps for treating the stored overflows.  The construction of a 6 million gallon holding tank will likely create more problems and expenses than it would solve for the city of Newport RI.

Please sign our petition to Julie Forgue and the City Council, urging them to withdrawal this option and find a viable solution to the city sewer problems; working with the DEM, EPA and Army Corps of Engineers.

I would strongly object to a holding tank being put under Spencer Park. One of my great concerns is that this would cause even more flooding in our area. A tank of the size that is proposed would adversely affect the drainage ability of the Park, which is already poor due to its low elevation. We who live around the Park are already very familiar with the sight of a huge ponds instead of grass, and sometimes impassable roads. A huge holding tank would undoubtably exacerbate this problem. Not to mention the possibilities of foul odours eminating from the tank - even on the understanding the tank will not hold raw sewage, and the destruction of the beautiful old trees.

This beautiful park overlooking the harbor is utilized by young and old, making the fifth ward a truly historic and beautiful neighborhood. This project will destroy this up and coming area and result in homes decaying and general deteriation of a downtown Newport neighborhood as there will be little incentive to continue the vast improvements and renovations the neighborhood has experienced over the past 5-10 years. This is a travesty!!!

The park was first designated a no building zone and should be honored. Residents are being used by the money people to pay for their building and overcrowding large condo's to fix their sewer problem. Please don't wreck out town anymore.

To use the park as a holding tank for raw sewage is a bad idea. The park is build on reclaimed land (Fen).

We have a great interest in the City of Newport. My father was a native Newporter, born in a house at 44 Warner St and raised through out his life in Newport, RI. Gren Frazer, an all-star catcher, played many a baseball game at Cardines Field, still in Newport and a place where I visit from time to time. Our daughter, picked Newport and Salve Regina University because of its beauty. I strongly ask you to save Spencer Park in Newport. The beautification and restoration of Newport should continuously move forward not be torn down. Keep our environment strong.

As children, we played football and baseball here. Hung out here watching the 4th of July fireworks traffic file out from Kings Park. Even, my grandparents house was built in the park and moved to where it is now on Clinton street. I love this park. To destroy it would be a damn shame.

Julie, I have long enjoyed quiet walks with my dogs at Spencer Park. It is a place where I can mentally escape after working all day in the Operating Room at the hospital. I would find it a great dis-service to come home take a walk after dinner only to have no where to unwind, but rather her pumps running 24hrs. Please re-think your proposal and ask yourself is this what you would want for You and Your Family.

I find the proposal to dig up the park completely unacceptable! This would certainly kill all the mature trees by upsetting their root systems if not requiring their outright removal. Flooding of the site is also a very real concern. My family has used this park all our lives. My sister & cousins and many close friends live on Clinton Ave and Marchant Street and this will certain have a negative impact on their neighborhood and quality of life . Get rid of some of the hideous time share units and put a tank under there. Leave our park alone!

I live on Clinton st. I sit and read in the park under the trees! I love watching all the dogs and families playing in the park in the summer! It would be a shame to ruin this peaceful place!

Let's take a more environmentally responsible approach altogether. It would make more sense to move the entire waste management facility to a location that is not emptying into Newport Harbor nor in an area near beaches or that is thriving on the tourism industry.

Find another place to put your holding tank! Spencer Park is a beautiful community, common ground area, where people enjoy playing with their dogs, football games, picnicing with their families, and meeting up with each other to say hello. What a shame to take away a peaceful place that means so much to all who enjoy. I'm sure there must be other places to place this holding tank. Please don't ruin a good thing and turn it into a big regret for those of us who live in this area.

Please protect our neighborhood! Spencer Park is a beautiful spot & is used & enjoyed by numerous people. This special space should not be ruined by constructing a holding tank.

This park is an oasis of tranquility for the residents of the 5th Ward. To destroy it for the purpose of sewage is reprehensible. The architect of this harebrained idea is a disgrace.

The idea of an underground tank in this low lying area is outrageous. This is a scenic peaceful area that will be tainted by “effluvium” (flowing out 1 : an invisible emanation; especially : an offensive exhalation or smell 2 : a by-product especially in the form of waste … Merriam-Webster online) as the city as noted. Displacing ground and trees for a tank is not the answer to overflow issues. Residents love this park. The beauty of this area is why we tolerate high taxes, water bills and flood insurance requirements. I enjoy being close to the water, but do not want to be close to an underground tank of waste water.
