Probably the most significant mural to grace our hallways has been reduced to this shameful act.

Save the Brooke High School Murals NOW!

Target:
Current/former students of Brooke High School, WV and their friends/family.

When Brooke High School first opened it's doors to students, one of its first traditions was to have art students paint murals on the wall reflecting the culture and spirit of the times. Over the years, alumni visiting the school have come to cherish and remember their years by first being reminded of the memories contained in these murals. Walking the halls of the school brought back the good old days and reminded us of the meaning behind the words to the Alma Mater:

Hail to Thee our Alma Mater
To Thee we'll be true.
All hail to the ideals which you stand for
All things old and new.

So through the years we shall remember
All that you've meant so bold.
Forever to stay within our hearts
Our Brooke High green and gold.

Sadly, in December of 2007 some of these treasured memories were painted over- whitewashing the visual memories that current students and alumni have come to cherish.

A grassroots campaign to have the murals restored to their original beauty was started and promises were made that there would be a restoration of these murals. Two years later NONE of the murals has been restored ; it is shameful, deplorable and far from acceptable.

Please sign this petition if you care about having these murals restored to their original beauty and maybe we can make a difference. I will personally present this at a future board meeting and we will demand that our voices be heard.

Thank you very much...

This makes me so sad. Such a beautiful gift left by many talented Bruin alums and no one cared enough to save them from ruin!

I am one of the students who was chosen to paint a mural in the school. I had painted the creation of Adam in the Art Dept. I was personally asked my Mr. White to paint this mural. It took me 6 months to complete due to it being the only mural at Brooke High School that was done in Oil Paints. This was something that I was hoping that my children and grandchildren could see when they attended Brooke High. I'm just glad that I have pictures to remember this. I can still remember when I was 5 years old getting a tour of Brooke high school and can remember looking at all of the murals and thinking to myself how amazing it was that they were then and could only imagine how much of an honor it would be if some day I could be one of the very few chosen to grace the walls of Brooke High School with my talent. I was floored when I was eventually asked and now that has been taken away from me. Thank you for listening, Eric Ensminger RN

The murals are part of the history of BHS. Losing them would destroy the legacy of the arts in Brooke County.

When I was just a little girl I remember walking through Brooke High School and being blown away by all of the magnificent artwork embracing the halls. I made a deal with myself then, that no matter what, I was going to have the privilege of being a featured artist there one day. As a Junior in the class of 2007, my dream came true, my art that i worked on so many of my adolescent years to master was finally going to be a part of the history of this school, or so i was to believe. Now approaching the third year since my graduation, I'm absolutely appalled by the decisions that the principal, and the Board have made to "improve" the schools appearance. Do they not have any heart, or consideration towards the hard work and soul the students who created these pieces put forward? You see in my opinion, art is more than something to look at, or something to pass your time with, it is passion, brilliance, imagination, dedication, discipline, and honor, and its beauty only grows WITH TIME! Are those not the same principles that the foundation of the school system depends upon, and tries to instill in each and every student to walk through the door? Saving the murals would not only lift the weight of a broken promise from the school to myself, my fellow artists, and the fans, but would also take back the hippocratic words and actions from Mrs. Shute & The Brooke County Board of Education. Please take all into consideration, this is serious, heartbreaking matter to myself and many others that needs to be properly handled.

The person who painted over these murals must not have an ounce of conscience to think it was ok to cover up all the work and love that went to these murals.

I remember walking through the halls just a few years ago and hoping something would be done to restore the old murals, but the fact that there are pictures of them where they were painted helps.

These murals mean so much to those of us who will always remember our years at Brooke with such fondness. It's such a small thing to ask that they be left there and even that they be maintained each year, with minimal cost. The school has changed in so many ways since my graduation in '79 that it would be nice to know that some things will always remain the same.

I can't believe that they were painted over.. Of all the things to do to the school... Talk about eliminating Bruin Pride... I can see this happening if the new principle was not from the county or out of state. But from what I hear they exactly graduated from Brooke High... It just amazes me.... Restore them !!!!!!!!!!

I remember the very first time stepping through the doors of what seemed to be at the time the biggest and most scary place in the world Brooke High School ! It was 1982 and as a Green Horn ,the name given to all who were to be Freshman. I was nervous wondering what my experience would bring! As I started to walk down the halls I began to notice over my anxiety these Beautiful Murals all over the walls painting a past and present history of the School and the Times ! ( As we progressed through the years more murals were added and our story was being told through the talented hands of Art Students! ) I was certain that if I would choose to visit my Alma Mater at any point in my life I would see the what we all would cherrish! The Story that only walls can tell ! And I would hope to see more murals as time progressed ! I am TwentyThree years removed and find myself in a posistion of almost begging for the restoration of the murals that were to tell the story of all Bruins to ever walk our beloved halls ! I ask that you please restore our history! Please do not erase us and our memories ! I know that you will do the correct thing !

I have only signed a few petitions in my adult life, but I feel this cause is worth being added to that list. I feel part of Bruin pride has been taken from us, and I don't think anyone had the right to do so. Forever to stay within are hearts are Brooke High Green and Gold!!!

Why would you cover the innovation that set Brooke High apart from all other schools.
