Did you know that cats were introduced in the old continent by Phoenicians? And that probably Cadiz (Spain) was their first European home?
These wonderful creatures, symbol of freedom of the city, apart from keeping the streets clean, have always been a constant source of inspiration for singers, writers and poets for centuries. Anyone could think that the cats of Cadiz should be protected and cherished, nonetheless, this is far for being true.
There's an incomprehensibly neglected part of Cadiz called Campo del Sur that has become a dumping place over the years. But the most dramatic part, is that people not only throw away garbage there, but also abandon their most fragile and innocent citizens: cats.
Needless to say that, as a result of that lack of responsibility, many of these cats are trapped into old buildings to end up being food for rats. While others, if not by human cruelty (I'm unable to list the tortures in order not to hurt your sensibility), are killed by winter conditions, lack of hygiene or starvation.
As you all can see, as far as the city of Cadiz is concerned, cats are either invisible or garbage, and nowadays, the situation is so severe, that the few sensitive, dedicated and selfless people who fight to help these creatures, are being disparaged and their efforts constantly boycotted (their water and food is poisoned or magically removed, among other things).
To make things worse, Cadiz and the surrounding towns in the Bay of Cadiz, are preparing for the Bicentenary celebrations of the Spanish Constitution in 2012, a date that will make it the Latin American Capital of Culture. The council needs Cadiz to look modern and stunning, which in cat language can only be translated into a word: culling.
Once again, Spain, resorts to the most inhumane way to solve the problem of overpopulation. Apparently, for the Council of this famous city, neutering and spaying is not even an option. The financial crisis is used, as ever, as an excuse to punish the more helpless and unprotected. WE CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!! These cats have been condemned to death!!!!
Some animal lovers along with the NGO Sos Callejeros are desperately fighting against the clock to save as many lives as possible. In their David-against-Goliath fight, hey need veterinary care and financial aid to provide them with the essential care. But obviously, they can't save them all unless we help them. They need all the animal lovers they can get to wake up Cadiz conscience. The world needs to know that this spanish city has no respect for life, that they torture and kill their precious, inspiring cats instead of protect them. How can such a cruel and insensitive city towards animals become a cultural venue? What kind of message of progress and respect are they spreading?
Please, these cats need us to:
1- Sign this petition! We need as meny signatures as we can!
2- Send the letter attached to the Mayor or, even better, write one of your own. In that model letter we let them know that we strongly oppose to the way things are handled and attack them with the thing they fear most: tourism. We also urge them to solve the problem of overpopulation with the only humane way possible: prevention, which means neutering and spaying. The more e-mails they get, the more powerful this campaign will be! (gabinete.alcaldia@telefonica.net )
