Save the Historic Avenue Theater in Downey, California

Target:
People who live in and around Downey.
Sponsored by:

This petition is to prevent the destruction of the historic Avenue Theater in Downey, California.

Background information

The Avenue Theater was originally built in 1922, and was the second movie house built in the downtown area.   It featured a brick facade which contains a beautiful arch which at onetime marked the entrance to the theater.  This brickwork remains intact behind the present facade.  The theater has changed names over the years, it was originally called the Downey Theater, then it was the Victory and finally it was changed to the Avenue Theater in the year 1948.  The theater was moderate in size with an 850 auditorium and a single screen.  In the early days there were also live stage shows and the facility still has about 15 dressing rooms below the stage area. In the 1970's the theater started it's downhill slide and eventually became a second run movie house.  It closed for good in the year 2003 only to be used for some b-movie shoots.

The City of Downey's plan and our Vision for a restored Avenue Theater.

The City of Downey is now the owner of the historic theater and has plans to build condos and low rent apartments on the site.  It is our belief that this is not the best use for the theater.  We would like to see the building restored and used as an historical and cultural meeting place for the community of Downey where patrons can see live shows, vintage movies, jazz bands, informative speakers and community events.  This is our vision for the Avenue Theater; please help by signing our petition.

I know for myself that there are so many sentimental reasons to restore the Avenue Theater, but it is so much more important for the City of Downey to keep its history where viable and I feel that even in these tough times that restoring this theater is possible.

This building should restored!! It holds both historical and cultural meaning. Please don't tear it down just to make a profit...

I grew up knowing the owner Phang in the 80`s. I have so many memories there and seen many movies there. If I had the money I would buy it restore it and run it. I don`t want to see it go.

Well every year, for many many years the Annual Christmas Parade has marched passed the Historis Theater. Countless Number of people watched movies there while growing up in Downey. It's one of the only true landmarks from way back into what, the 30's? Save it!

Because or else Downey will turn out to be a ghetto town with low income housing.

The theater has been around a long time and is not only a place of historical significance but a place of memories. Don't ruin it by making it into a housing place, that's a horrible place for that.

I have been going to this theater since i was a little girl and i think it would be tragic to see this theater torn down and used for housing!! Please save this historic site its one of the few things that makes Downey stand out and so special!

THE AVENUE THEATRE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE HISTORY OF DOWNEY, WITHOUT IT IN DOWNTOWN DOWNEY WILL NOT BE THE SAME. I WAS BORN AND RAISED HERE IN DOWNEY AND IT HAS BEEN A BIG PART OF GROWING UP.

Though I live in Texas now, I grew up in Downey and have great memories of the Downey Avenue Theater. Tearing it down would be throwing away a piece of the city's history. Please do not demolish a piece of history that means so much to so many.

The Downey Ave. has been part of the city of years to come and tearing it down would be like taking down Johnny's. sad and very upsetting. I grew up in Downey and attended the Downey Ave. Theater many weekends. There are alot of memories that stand in that building alone. Make condo will not do any good. Please don't do it.

It's been there for a very long time. It is a part of Downey history. A community cultural/music center would be ideal.
