Sumatran orangutans have been classified as critically endangered by the IUCN.The populatation of wild sumatran orangutans has declined drastically from over 12,000 in 1994 to 7300 in 2003. 2009 estimates were about 6000.
The organgutans have lost 80% of their habitat over the last 20 years.
Despite these numbers they are still logging in protected areas and clear burning areas to make room for palm oil plantations.
Something needs to be done before these creatures and their habitat are gone forever.
We the undersigned think you need to stop the deforestation where these orangutans live before it is to late. As you can see by the numbers about half have died because of loss of habitat in the last 15 years. Please stop the destruction of their habitat and let them live in peace.Thank you for your time.
