It is said that Columbus discovered the Americas. He did not. What he has been promoted to symbolize is the beginnings of a new time in the lands; the beginnings of 'our' times, as we learn in school. We are reminded every year on Columbus day. This is a story that could possibly be considered one of hope and noble adventure, but for many it is a reminder of death, bloody conquest and a loss of freedom. I hope, very much, that a measure of tact and consideration for such people is undertaken in this proposal of a new statue of Columbus. In it's stead I sure that there is someone or something that could be memorialized that would a bring inspiration and appreciation to all who experience it. Thank you for your time.

Very important issue. Even though we might be proud of our heritage we are also proud of who we were before colonization.

Every "Columbus Day" is a day of mourning for the indigenous peoples of the Americas as well as all people of conscience who are aware of the heinous crimes initiated by this man, the degradation and utter devastation unleashed on innocent and defenseless populations, and the legacy of indifference towards racist atrocities committed for the cause of political power and material wealth on this continent. To honor Columbus is almost like honoring Hitler. Genocide and greed are still with us, wearing different masks. We need to examine the history of "man's inhumanity to man" and bring it to light, expose and extinguish the power and malignancy of race hatred. We must unraveling the hateful tapestry of lies and racist propaganda- lies which keep us from painful but necessary truths about the violence of inequity and injustice which continues today, still masquerading with heroic pomp. We must face the truth in order for real healing on a global level to move forward.

How can this country honor someone who did not find anything. this land was never lost. This discredits this countries so called beliefs and should be revoked. We can all let by gones be by gones but first the respect is needed, and it is not being shown. Put ego aside, put pride aside. All of that doesnt matter and wont matter. And deep down inside everyone knows that.

As a Native American woman and mother I feel that honoring a man of this caliber has been an issue that needed ratification since I was in grade school. If I as a young child knew that this was wrong, why has no one else understand this as well?

As a descendant of slaves, I cannot condone the memorialization of a man who took that which was not rightfully his-be it lives, land, and credit for "discovering" several already populated land masses.

Christopher Columbus is not a man to be honored. He was a monster who raped our women and killed our people and was one of the men responsible for the slave Trade. How could he have discovered anything if we were here already. Let's not celebrate or honor such a horrible human being.

I fail to see the purpose in honoring an individual responsible for the near annihilation of an indigenous people and their culture.

This issue is important to me because for too long schools have been omitting the truth. They just mentioned he was lost, but they don't go in depth about all the atrocities he committed. It is way past the time where Indigenous People get the recognition they deserve.

I live in a community where I am the minority and indigenous people are the majority. We need to stop honoring Columbus for the awful things he did. Please empower indigenous people by ending Columbus Day for 2010.
