Stop Blagojevich from cutting funding to state historic sites 2

Target:
Illinois Historic Sites
During the 3rd week of July, Rod Blagojevich is slashing 50% of the state's budget used to maintain state historic sites.  The sites range from the well-known Lincoln stops in Springfield to the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington, Bryant Cottage in Bement, the Shawneetown Bank in Old Shawneetown, and our own Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island.

These cuts will be debated by the state general assembly beginning on Wednesday, July 16th.

Please sign this petition and let Illinois law makers know that the money used to maintain our state's historic and cultural touchstones is well worth our time, effort, and expense.

We the undersigned express our support of state spending for Illinois State Historic Sites and their staff.  We find the proposed budget cuts by Rod Blagojevich to the funding of State Historic Sites to be a deep blow to our collective cultural history and understanding.  We wish to express to the Governor, as well as the Illinois General Assembly, that we value both a balanced budget as well as support for our Historic and Cultural sites.

The educational opportunities provided by our State Historic Sites is invaluable.  The support staff, which would be impacted severely by these cuts, is an essential part of the cultural interpretation that these sites provide to the public.

We the undersigned do not support the $2.8 billion in budget cuts proposed by Rod Blagojevich, and we ask you join us in defiance.

Thank you.

I have numerous childhood memories of the park trails, museum and landmark in Rock Island, where I attended Alleman High School. This is a crime what our crooked governor has done and now we have to utilize our tax dollars to prosecute him. Illinois is looking rediculous to the whole nation d/t this foolish arrogant Governor!

Sir, The Quad Cities highly values the Black Hawk State Historic Site and associated museum. As an archaeologist, I cannot stress enough the importance of the site. Area educators use the site and museum to teach archaeology and regional prehistory to their students. Please help preserve the state's historic and prehistoric sites to education the citizens of the future about the cultures of the past.

This is one of the most beautiful parks I have ever been to, and I have been fortunate enough to show my 3 children how beautiful this park is. To close this historic park down would be a shame.

I have lived in the Quad Cities since I was a kid. The BlackHawk Historical Site is a city landmark and shouldn't be shut down. It is a very beautiful place and should be recognized for its beauty. There should be a landmark law that states that offical state landmarks cannot be closed for any reason. Save BlackHawk Historical Site!!!!!!!

Black hawk state park and other various historic sites should not be shut down in any way shape or form. They are important historic and cultural sites of that area's history.

Without historic sites for schools and the general public to go to the true meaning of history will be loss. There are some things that just can not be learned from books.

This is an absolute travesty. one of my best memories in childhood included this park. now my children won't have the opportunity to experience the same. Please reconsider. Lorado Taft's statue is something to be marveled at up close. Blagojevich should be ashamed of himself for more than the obvious.

The Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island closed on November 30th, 2008--a very sad day indeed. My husband and I have visited this site numerous times and have brought many family members and friends to see the statue of Chief Black Hawk, and explore the John Hauberg Indian Museum. Losing this important "resource" for accurate information about the Sauk and Mesquaki people is a travesty. This is just one of many significant historic sites in the state of Illinois that have suffered the same fate. In light of the recent situation with Governor Blagojavich, please reconsider this BAD decision. It is not too late to re-evaluate and turn things around. We want to continue to share our state's rich history with our visitors. In turn this will support the many communities throughout the state of Illinois that rely on the tourism drawn to these vital museums and attractions!

I am an Iowa resident and have visited the beautiful Black Hawk State Park and Historic Site. There are many like me who come to Illinois to explore history and cultural museums, art, and other important attractions. I only recently learned about the news of these closures and was disheartened that I would not be able to return and further my exploration. How did this happen? Why are there not more people protesting this insane decision? What is this country coming to when its citizens cannot enjoy places like these to discover, learn and explore? There are other ways to balance a budget. This should not be the way.

I'm from Springfield, IL and i know that our city relies on tourism. Our restaurants, shopping malls, and other businesses need tourism to thrive. By closing the dana thomas house and other budget cuts are hurting not only Springfield, but the entire state of Illinois.

Dear State Officials, I would like you each to personally reconsider the funding cuts. Better management of programs and competitive vendor bidding will provide you with more than adequate yields. By not assertively pursuing this course of action, substandard performance and overpayment for services is perpetuated. Best Regards, John G. Baresky

It is our responsibility as citizens of Illinois to protect the places that define our history. But We must also protect those places that are part of the natural area, preventing over devlopment in some of the most beautiful places in Illinois

Every year I take my first grade students to the Hauberg Museum at Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island. This museum is the best resource I have for teaching children about the Native Americans who lived here before us. They learn so many valuable life lessons during our guided visit. The Hauberg Museum at Black Hawk Historic Site is too important to the education of our youth, and should not be forced to close.

Illinois historical sites provide citizens with a window on the past. State historic sites such as Grant's Home, Salem Village and Blackhawk State Park are Illinois treasures that need to be not only preserved and promoted, but open to the public.

Once you cut the funding to these sights they start to go away. That is because people stop visiting them. Once they are too far gone, it costs too much to restore them. Look in the mirror and find somewhere else to make your budget cuts. Don't cut these just because it's easy.

You need to cut funing somewhere else - like all the pork that gets put in all the bills. These historic sites are part of our past and need to be somewhere we can go with our children and show them and teach them about the past.
