HB 101 For those of you that have not heard, there is a bill coming to the floor that will allow local government to have breed specific legislation in our areas. This is coming forth from House Rep Perry Thurston (D) from the Ft Lauderdale area. It will take out the wording "eliminating the prohibition of breed specific local government regulations of dangerous dogs" and will go into effect on July 1, 2008.
Please do NOT think this will effect only those with breeds such as Pitt Bulls, this will allow those in charge to determine and classify "dangerous dogs". Please sign this petition and tell Tallahassee NO to HB101.

I think this is a horrible bill that puts the blame of a few bad dogs on innocent animals. If a dog exhibits dangerous behavior, the owner should be responsible, regardless of the dog's breed.

Punish Bad Owners, not innocent breeds. Put more effort inforcing prenalties for animal abuse, mass breeders, dog fighters, animal hoarders, neglect, ect. These "people" should be regulated, not breeds of dogs. Any dog can be taught aggression, don't label certain breeds as dangerous, it's the owners' who make them dangerous.

Dear Govenor,Rep.,commioners, and whomever else can be our voice.
We ask that you do not pass the HB101 bill. Dogs are not dangerous
by nature. We as owners are responsible for their behavior. I have
worked with dogs for over 15 years and realize dogs are willing to
do whatever you teach them. Their mental capability is actually that
of a toddler. Please take the time to educate yourselves a bit on dog
behavior before making a decision. I ask that you pass a bill that would
punish those that are involved in teaching this breeds violence
Thank You for your consideration in this matter.

Wake up people! All behaviors are learned ... this type of legistlation punishes the victim, not the perpetrator(s). Instead of banning breeds, we must promote responsible dog ownership. How about some legislation toward that goal?

We need to make dog fighting illegal, and teach children how to act around large dogs. We do not need to make people get rid of a family member (their beloved dog!)

Breed-specific bans are very costly and ineffective ways to address dog aggression. Irresponsible owners and breeders are the problem. Punish the people, not the dogs.

I agree with Jennifer Hobgood when she wrote, "Legislation aimed at punishing the owner of the dog rather than punishing the dog is far more effective in reducing the number of dog bites and attacks." I know of far more dangerous humans than dogs. My beautiful, kind and loving Doberman is an example of that. This boy wouldn't hurt a flea.

This is inhumane to do something like this! Not every single one of these dogs in this breed is harmful!!!! I mean there are humans out there who murder and people who are like Angels, what can we do about that? What is this world coming to?

I have two small children and a 5 year old shar pei that is the sweetest, most amazing dog ever and our family would be absolutely devastated if we could no longer live in our home because of the breed of dog that we own!!! As a responsible Florida voter for 32 years, I am strongly opposed to HB 101. The only laws that should be enacted are ones that place primary responsibility for a dog’s behavior on the owner, regardless of the breed.

Breed specific bans are not the answer. Punish the people who engage in animal cruelty, dog fighting, and neglect. Punish the people who employ inhumane training methods to create unstable individual dogs. But leave the millions of innocent dogs and loving responsible dog owners alone. Do not punish the majority for the actions of the few...Ban stupid people, not dogs.

Once again we are removing the responsibility from PEOPLE and placing it where it does not belong. I have 2 pit bulls rescued from the street. Despite their rocky upbringing they love kids, cats, and everyone that walks through my door.
We need to educate the public that many of these breeds - German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc. have a pack mentality and require lots of discipline and care. The problem is not the animals; it's their owners.

I'm extremely disappointed that a Democratic legislator from my own home area is unable to understand that the owner of the bad dog should be punished, not the entire breed! That's like banning all BMW 325's because one caused an accident. Who would even think of such a thing?
Dogs are important parts of many families. Don't punish us because of a few bad owners.

I think that it is sad that the law determines what you can have. I have a 7 year old Rottie that I found on the side of the road when he was probably about a year old and he is the best dog I have ever had. I have had to go to parents homes in my neighborhood because I have caught kids throwing rocks at my dog while he was behind the fence, out of the 4 kids that I caught only 1 parent came down to apologize. My dog is the biggest lap dog that I have ever had, I sit on my swing outside with him and he just hops in my lap and he weighs 105lbs. It is not the breed but it is people that are not educated or just don't care that make them look bad. You should probably spend more time passing a law to help prevent the abuse of animals, and make laws tougher for the people who fight these animals. The people who have the dogs as pets have a loyal friend, so you are going to make them suffer because of people who abuse these animals. That's really sad!!!

I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE MAN STILL WANTS TO ELIMINATE ANYTHING IT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND. YOU WOULD GUESS THAT FLORIDA STATE REP. PERRY E. THURSTON WOULD HAVE THE COMMON SENSE TO KNOW ANY ANIMAL NEEDLESS TO SAY HUMANS THAT ARE MISTREATED WILL REACT NEGATIVELY TOWARDS SOCIETY. WE ALL HAVE HAD A "HUMAN" FAMILY MEMBER WHOSE BEEN MISTREATED SOMEWHERE BY SOMEONE SOMEHOW AND HAS DONE SOMETHING UNEXPECTED.TAKE A MINUTE AND THINK ABOUT WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS THESE SO CALLED DANGEROUS DOG BREEDS HAVE MADE, FROM MILITARY MEDAL, TO BIG SCREEN MOVIES, OH AND LETS NOT FORGET WHO ALSO HELPED SOME OF THE 9-11 VICTIMS RECOVER.IF YOU ARE ACTUALLY CONSIDERING THIS BILL TO BE BENEFICIAL TO OR FAMILIES, THEN WHAT WILL FLA. STATE REP PERRY E. THURSTON PLAN TO DO TO HELP THE FAMILIES WHO WILL/HAVE TO MOVE DUE TO THE FACT THEY WOULD NEVER CONSIDER PARTING WITH A FAMILY PET THAT'S REGARDED AS A FAMILY MEMBER.

i am a proud responsible owner of a beautiful rottweiler..i feel its wrong to ban certain breeds because people need to realize and understand to punish the deed and not the breed.. it's the irresponsible owners fault and not the breeds...realize and understand that ANY BREED can go bad if put into the wrong hands.. I am a proud owner of a Deaf American Pit Bull Terrier. He is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. BSL will not stop dog bites. BSL will only make matters worse. This is not a matter of breed, but of responsible dog ownership. If the leash laws and confinment laws were enforced correctly this would solve the dog bite problems. Please rethink this bill for the responsible "Pit Bull" owners and the well behaved, well mannered dogs out there. Thank you for your consideration.

Education is needed for any responsible dog owner..and also it's the OWNER, not the dog, that needs to take responsibility for their dogs, no matter what the breed. This time around it's Rotties and "pit bull", 20 years ago it was Dobermans.. It's not a "breed" that is dangerous!!!
