Stop Fluoridation in Grande Prairie's Water

  • by: Stacey Iwaskow

25,000 liters of fluoride, a medical drug, is being injected into Grande Prairie and Area's water supply annually without the consent of the citizens who ingest it.

A few facts about fluoridation:

- Fluoride works when applied to the outer surface of the teeth, not when swallowed

- Excess fluoride has been linked to dental fluorosis (white spots/pitting of teeth), skeletal fluorosis (pain in joints and bone fractures), reduced IQ in children and soft tissue damage of the brain, kidneys and endocrine system.

- The World Health Organization found no link between tooth decay trends in fluoridated vs non-fluoridated countries

- Fluosilicic acid, what is injected into our water supply, is a hazardous by-product from the fertilizer industry

 - Once fluoride is added to water, there is no way to control who gets the drug and how much they ingest

- Fluoridation violates your right to informed consent to medication

Many cities in Canada are discontinuing the practice of fluoridation. Let's ask our council to rid Grande Prairie's water of this chemical as well.

We, the undersigned, are concerned with the practice of injecting fluoride into Grande Prairie's water supply.

Our main concern is with the unethical practice of mass medicating 100% of Grande Prairie's residence without their informed consent. There is no control of dose or dosage because every person drinks a different amount of water per day. No medical professional would administer medication to a patient without dosage suggestions or knowledge of medical history. The practice of water fluoridation is an unethical medical practice for these reasons.

At least 50% of fluoride bioaccumulates in the human body. It can cause hormonal, gastrointestinal, hematological, skeletal, renal, respiratory, cardiovascular, immunological, neurological and developmental side effects (The Anatolian Journal of Cardiology).

In January 2011, the EPA reversed it's stance on fluoridation because of the possible deleterious effects on children. In 2008, Health Canada suggested that the mixing of infant formula with fluoridated water increases the risk for dental fluorosis and it not suggested. Buying bottled water, instead of relying on the city supply, to mix infant formula is not a practice the City of Grande Prairie should require of it's citizens.

In 2004, the World Health Organization found no link between Tooth Decay Trends in fluoridated country vs. non-fluoridated countries, which is only proposed benefit of fluoridation of drinking water.

Aquatera is presently using hydrofluosilicic acid to our water supply, not pharmaceutical calcium fluoride. This chemical is used in fertilizers and taken from the aluminum industries waste stacks. Environmental laws prevent it from being disposed of anywhere except toxic waste treatment facilities... and our drinking water.

There are over 8000 scientists, researchers, doctors and dentists who have signed a petition to cease the practice of fluoridation. Calgary has just made the strong decision for its citizens to stop water fluoridation. It will take a great amount of courage to make this decision for the overall health of your constituents. There is much talk of this happening throughout Canada; in the long run you will be seen as visionaries in public health.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
