The global demand of palm oil is causing a staggering amount of deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. Indigenous and traditional people are being forced from their forest homes, orangutans slaughtered, and the recently logged land is being planted with palm trees.

Palm oil plantations now cover vast swathes of land in Indonesia and Malaysia. Most of these plantations are in areas which were once covered in Lush tropical rainforests. The conversion of forests to monoculture palm plantations has resulted in the lost of some of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Fires are deliberately lit to clear and prepare the land causing massive quantities of carbon to be released into the atmosphere, adding tot eh already serious global problem of climate change. As well as destroying the habitat for species who where once well hidden by the rainforest to be easily poached for display in circuses and illegal selling of many rare animals. Indigenous people have been forced from their land and those working ion the lowest rungs of the palm industry ladder are earning a pittance. Finally, the last refuge for the free living orang-utans is being destroyed, forcing these animals to the brink of extinction. It is estimated that within 15 years, 98% of the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia will be gone. Almost 90% of organgutan habitat has already disappeared. Some orangutan populations have dropped by half in the past 15 years, and may be extinct in the wild withint10 years if current trends of habitat loss continue. Because palm oil trees grow so well in wet, tropical climates and produce a huge amount of oil per acre, governments and business simply see dollar signs when they look at these forests. As long as companies continue using palm oil, the Indonesian and Malaysian governments will allow the clearing and burning of rainforests to develop new plantations. The cosmetics industry uses approx 6-7% of the worlds palm oil.

This is why I have chosen to write to Cargill, the biggest palm oil importer into the United States, and one of the biggest producers in the world. THES PRACTICES MUST BE STOPPED!!! For obvious reasons. Not only is our LARGEST and MOST IMPORTANT rainforest being destroyed (our clean air-gone, many of our natural health products will be gone, not to mention natural beauty) but the homes for many wild life species will be gone as well. This is just one of the many ways in which we are contributing to our own destruction. Please lend your name to the cause.

CARGILL: It is now your responsibility to no longer turn a blind eye to what is going on in Borneo, Malaysia, Bangkok and all surrounding areas of the rainforest. Shame on you for even allowing these practices to go on for as long as they have. Every species of life has a right to safe and ethical treatment, away from harm, and threat of loosing their homes. If money is your only motivation for allowing these practices to happen then you will one day be subjected to judgement to which I would love to be apart of. You NEED to take necessary action to ensure your palm oil does not destroy rainforests, violate human rights or harm the climate. There are safer alternatives to palm oil, I%u2019m sure you can use your %u201Cbrilliant minds%u201D to come up with something, but just in case you can%u2019t here are a few that I have found just by doing simple research.
