Stop Prisoner Abuse in America

>Terry Turner is an inmate at Eastern Regional Diagnostic and Corrections Center in Missouri. In 2007 he walked into prison. Today he is a paraplegic who must be on a catheter for the rest of his life due to medical malpractice and neglect by CMS (now known as Corizon). He is also being terrorized by prison staff.

>George Bartz is an inmate at the Washington Department of Corrections. He has degenerative joint disease of the knee; Medical staff has recommended total knee replacement; The DOC Offender Health plan indicates that Mr. Bartz's serious condition is not medically necessary;

Without the recommended knee replacement, Mr. Bartz will remain in pain and his bone structure will further deteriorate to the extent where the deteriorated bone structure will not support a knee replacement.

>Lewis Erskine is an inmate at the Colorado Department of Corrections, He has the 3 bulging disks, 1 protruding disk and continues to be in severe pain; For 3 years, he has experienced numbness and shooting pains when he tries to walk or sit for a very long time; He has lost 90 lbs now; His legs have so much pain that it has become hard to stand and he must hold onto something to keep him upright; He is now experiencing migraine headaches and sensitivity to light; He has been denied surgery for his spine conditions.

The above named individuals are just a sampling of the thousands of inmates who face abuse and neglect on a daily basis.

Often their illnesses and injuries first come to light in a very minor form and then exacerbate due to medical malpractice and neglect, or through abuse at the hands of prison guards.

When we turn a blind eye to their suffering, we are condoning the actions of their tormentors.

These negligent doctors are in our society. They live in our neighborhoods. What else are they capable of. Do you really think their cruelty stops when they leave the prison?

And what of the guards? Guards rape, beat and torture prisoners. They break their bodies, they blind them and they force them to endure harsh and inhumane conditions.

These sadistic guards get their ideas from stories of the military torturing suspected terrorists.

These same guards are also living in society, in our neighborhoods. They have families. We may even see them at PTA meetings, in church or at the market. If they can do these terrible things while performing the duties of their profession, what other crimes are they committing?

Help me urge President Obama to take action where others have only  issued lies and ultimatums. It's time to ask President Obama  to intervene on behalf of all inmates who are suffering abuse and neglect at the hands of prison doctors and staff.

Thank You,

Reverend Irma Carew
