The genocide in Darfur continues despite the fact that the U.S. Congress, two U.S. Secretaries of State, and President Bush have labeled it as a genocide over two years ago. This is the first time in U.S. history that this has happened!
The crisis in Darfur has been going on for too long. Over 400,000 people have been brutally and systematically killed, raped, and tortured, and 2.3 million Darfurians have been displaced.
The United States must:
establish a ceasefire respected by all parties to the conflict
back the UN and AU envoys as they work for an internal political negotiating process
deploy an adequate UN or UN/AU hybrid peacekeeping force as established by Resolution 1706
begin a renewed and inclusive peace process which would include all necessary stakeholders and ensure a voice for the people of Darfur themselves
make peace in Darfur a top priority
take a leadership role in building a coalition of key international actors to force Khartoum to end the killing
implement multilateral sanctions against targeted government officials and entities
lead the international community to set up a no-fly zone over Darfur to monitor, report on, and halt hostile Sudanese military flights, thereby preventing the bombing of villages
sustain humanitarian aid and free access all over Darfur (continually fund aid programs, push to end Sudan's obstruction of aid efforts)
The genocide in Darfur is a terrible push on the world's conscience. Please sign this petition and take action.
