Stop Uranium Mining

Target:
To Abolish Uranium Mining
Sponsored by:
Virginia Uranium, Inc., a new corporation, is seeking to lift the moratorium on Uranium Mining in Virginia. Uranium production presents a serious threat to our water supplies. Radioactive and other toxic gases and particles will be washed and blown from the mill tailings unless they are protected from rain and wind for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of years. These toxins will then find their way into our waterways becoming a danger to people, livestock, wildlife and crops.  No one has yet put forth a means of controlling this type of pollution. Below are just a few reasons we need to stop them:

1.  The drinking water supply of Virginia Beach is downstream of the proposed mine in Southside. Other cities downstream of Uranium deposits include Fredericksburg and Richmond.
2.  The radioactive waste produced by a uranium mining and milling operation is stored on site for more than 1,000 years. Any leakage could contaminate waterways and wells.
3.  Uranium mining has left superfund federal clean-up sites everywhere it has been done west of the Mississippi River.
4.  The coal ash spill that flooded 400 acres in Tennessee in 2008 was caused by the failure of an earthen dam similar to those used to contain uranium mining waste. The spill would have been much worse had it contained radioactive uranium 'tailings'.
5.  No Uranium mining and milling operation has ever been licensed in the US east of the Mississippi. The region's wet climate and high population make it too risky.

The cost-benefit analysis on this one is easy... Don't do it. The cost to the environment and health are severe and last thousands of years. The benefits are corporate profits. We need to redirect our efforts to clean, sustainable energies such as solar and wind. The naysayers to these possibilities are running out of fuel!

"Uranium is the raw material of a power-elite who has taken Mother Earth's every living creature hostage." The Late Petra Kelly, An Authentic Green Nuclear fissioning happens in nuclear reactors or in nuclear warheads. Nuclear waste is the only product of nuclear fissioning. Nuclear waste is destructive of all living things. Nuclear waste lasts forever and must also be monitored forever. Nuclear waste will beggar our grand children. Greed for profit now is the only thing that drives the nuclear industry. Tapping renewable energy sources coupled with moderate consumption and healthy habits will meet all our needs and bring back a healthy environment for now and all generations to come."

What will it be used for? Nuclear reactors and atomic bombs. There are other resouces for power we haven't tapped yet. What will be the effect of cutting away and exposing the largest amount of radioactive material which has been part of the earth for tens of thousands of years? What about the safety of those removing it from the earth? What if there is an accident? No one thought Chernobyl would happen, but it did. Where will we put it? Where will we dispose of it?

If uranium mining is allowed in Virginia, we will be the only uranium mining operation in the region. We will be known for one thing- the area with the uranium mine. No one will want to visit or move here, many will leave. This has been done in other economically depressed communities in the US (and the world) because the residents were able to be exploited. Don't let them exploit us! We are smarter than that! We must protect our children, our land, our health and our heriteage! No one else will. They will make millions and leave us alone to live and die with their mess. http://www.wise-uranium.org/uippra.html

Uranium is an incredibly toxic material, and devastatingly dangerous when used by even the most responsible means. Just because we find we have a supply of something doesn't mean we have to destroy the planet by digging it up! Leave the uranium in the ground - we don't need it! There are many other SAFE energy sources readily available - wind, solar, wave, magnetic - Please use your brilliance and innovation to develop them instead!
