Strengthen the Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 24254)

Strengthen the Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 24254)

Target:
Senator Mel Martinez & Senator Bill Nelson
Take Action Now! The American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) is the greatest opportunity to guarantee a stable and prosperous future for our generation. A strong clean energy bill will stimulate our economy, increase America's competitiveness abroad and sever our ties to toxic and increasingly expensive fossil fuels. Unfortunately H.R. 2454 has been severely compromised by the problematic influence of energy companies on our legislature, tying our future to the unlikely success of unproven and potentially dangerous technologies such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration. Our generation doesn't want more coal, oil, nuclear or natural gas! We want clean energy to power our nation and the world without harming our bodies, our soil or our water! In December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to act on climate change and determine our future, and we have less than 6 months to act! We need real science-based solutions, not political deals.  So let's make it happen, contact our senators and urge them to strengthen the bill to show the rest of the world that Americans are committed!

We the undersigned urge you to support all efforts to strengthen the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454), oppose any moves to weaken it, and vote to pass H.R. 2454 so we can make it even stronger in the Senate.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act is the greatest opportunity to guarantee a stable and prosperous future for my generation.

We need the bill to cut greenhouse gas pollution quickly to return to a safe level in the atmosphere - below 350 parts-per-million; include, as part of the emissions-reduction measures, a switch to 100% renewable electricity in 10 years; preserve existing authority of the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas pollution; reject unreliable and fraud-prone "offsets" in place of real emission reductions; phase out coal, and prohibits the use/extraction of tar sand and oil shale -- all the worst culprits of global warming.

As voters, we are counting on you to pass comprehensive climate and energy legislation in 2009 that adheres to the following principles:

1.  Cut Carbon Dramatically and Immediately

    * Reduce global warming pollution by the targets science tells us are necessary: 25%-40% below 1990 levels by 2020; and 80%-95% below 1990 levels by 2050.
    * Set an aggressive cap on carbon immediately. If a cap-and-auction mechanism is chosen, 100% of pollution allowances must be auctioned.  Any revenue generated from this cap must be used to address the climate crisis in a just and equitable way; none of this money should go to polluting industries.
    * Conserve and restore the world's forests, ecosystems, and carbon sinks, which are the best natural defense in a warming world.

2.  Invest in a Green Economy

    * Create 5 million new jobs through investments in clean energy
    * Develop a Clean Energy Corps to create service, training, and job      opportunities in the clean energy economy
    * Train a generation of workers and volunteers to build our clean energy future and help communities adapt to the already changing climate

3.  Power our Future With Clean Energy, not Dirty Fuels

    * We see a future powered by clean, renewable energy like wind, solar, and geothermal; 100% of our electricity should come from these sources, and we should invest in sustainable transit and energy efficiency
    * End our dependence on dirty energy by enacting a moratorium on financing and development of new coal and nuclear plants, and oil shale and tar sands infrastructure
    * Immediately begin phasing out dirty and dangerous energy sources and methods of extraction, while also ensuring a just transition for affected workers and communities

4.  Lead the World to a Clean and Equitable Energy Future

    * Work with other nations to reach a strong new global climate treaty in Copenhagen that puts us on track to reduce carbon below 350 parts per million
    * Assist vulnerable communities and developing countries in the transition to low-carbon economies and with adaptation to the changing climate

As young voters, our future hangs in the balance of your decisions, and we implore you to join with us. There is no waiting. There is no higher priority. Please demand the passage of bold climate and energy legislation in 2009.

I appreciate what signer #30 from New Hampshire had to say about H.R. 2454 and second her "motion." Please support H.R. 2454.

REAL RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE NOW, PLEASE. NO MORE GREENWASHING OF THE INDUSTRIES THAT HAVE AN INVESTMENT IN CONTINUING THE PROBLEM.

As the chair of the Temple, NH Energy Committee, I speak for the citizens of my town when I call upon you to support the strongest possible American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R.2454)...not one which is gutted of its ability to do the job. Carbon capture and sequestration of fossil fuel CO2 is NOT the answer! We need clean energy and we need it FAST. Please exert whatever power you have to stand up for serious green house gas reductions which will take effect sooner and be cleaner than the capture and sequester solution. We must support new technologies like the Mantra Co.'s work in Tacoma, WA work to transform CO2s into useable, clean chemicals more easily, quickly, and inexpensively than the capture/sequestration method. And we ask that you work to fully.support non-fossil fuel sources of energy.

Carbon Capture and Sequestration is bogus money pit. No more money to coal or nuclear let them fund themselves! No also to forgetting the Clean Air Act it is there to protect us and the enviroment not for you to do away with it because of the cost to industry.

Balance is always the best solution, especially vs turning a blind eye to the realities that human existance creates. We must be responsible as a species for the sake of all the children, lest they be forced to deal with our irresponsibility. Pretending we have no impact is immature and a rediculous supposition. Seeking solutions that include minimizing impact, or mitigate it responsibly via recycling type activities is the only way we can with good conscience move forward.

We need real clean energy technology not another scam designed to allow energy cons to destroy our environment through political cronyism. Obama's clean coal rhetoric is nothing but sucking up to big business at the expense of our children and environment.

I do not want the use of coal or nuclear to be a part of America's future. Let's get some real offsets and clean energy that will create green jobs for years to come. We need to be leaders at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December, and "Clean Coal" is not the way to go. Please push for better climate legislation for our nation.
