Polystyrene/Styrofoam ban in Pacifica

Target:
Citizens of Pacifica interested in banning polystyrene/styrofoam in Pacifica
Sponsored by:

We the people of Pacifica understand the harm(s) of foam and solid polystyrene food service ware to human health and  the environment and request that the City of Pacifica eliminate its use from city facilities and events and food vendors/businesses.  We ask the City of Pacifica to pass a ban of all foam and solid polystyrene food service ware in Pacifica and require the use of recyclable, reusable, and compostable/biodegradable food service ware.

Following are some of the reasons we are requesting this ban:

  • Styrofoam and Polystyrene items are a common environmental pollutant that is non-biodegradable.
  • Styrofoam is notorious as a pollutant that breaks down into smaller and smaller non-biodegradable pieces that are ingested by marine life and other wildlife thus harming or killing them
  • Styrofoam is one of the common items littered and picked up in Pacifica as a part of the annual statewide Coastal Clean-up Day and the annual Earth Day Clean-up Event.
  • Polystyrene has been proven by the EPA to have serious impacts on human health, wildlife, the aquatic environment and the economy
  • Styrene is a known hazardous substance that the FDA suggests may penetrate food and drinks and be ingested by humans.
  • Styrene is a suspected carcinogen and neurotoxin which potentiallly threatens human health.
  • The environmental impacts of manufacturing, using, disposing, energy consumption, greenhouse gas effect, and other environmental effects of Styrofoam and Polystyrene are rated second most harmful in the State of California.
  • A variety of recyclable, reusable, and compostable/biodegradable food service ware exists that are better for the environment and human health.

We the people of Pacifica understand the harm(s) of foam and solid polystyrene food service ware to human health and  the environment and request that the City of Pacifica eliminate its use from city facilities and events and food vendors/businesses.  We ask the City of Pacifica to pass a ban of all foam and solid polystyrene food service ware in Pacifica and require the use of recyclable, reusable, and compostable/biodegradable food service ware.

this noxious substance has only exisited in the last century and has nowhere to go except in our oceans and landfill- it is choking up our environmnet at a very rapid rate. It is often washed up by ocean currents onto uninhabited islands where man isnt cleaning it up and most unfortunately where many endangered species migrate to breed. Endangered species then eat it up by mistake and die before they can feed their young. If we dont do something about it just imagine how much more will be out there in another 10, 20 30 years. just think...

Styrafoam has had a lot of horrible environmental effects. Animals, especially those that live in or near the ocean are experiencing many deaths due to the pollution of the styrafoam and hard plastics made of polystyrene, due to the dumpings in the oceans of waste. If we got rid of the polystyrene products, you could save a lot more animals and keep the Earth a lot cleaner and safer for us and every other living creature on it.

Please stop selling styrofoam in our city. We can do without it, and I hate seeing those little pellets of styrofoam on the beaches from broken up cups and containers. No way to clean that stuff up. We have so much to gain from a ban on this product, and very little to lose. Thank you very much for considering this request.

styrofoam is so easily replaced by paper, corrugated cardboard for packing and cardboard in food-service, which is already being used by many national chains. Its a matter of being responsible, not cheap. There was a time when paper did the job just fine and was perfectly acceptable. Styrofoam carries too many issues and risks. Its time to turn the clock back on this product.

I would not mind--actually i would LOVE to pay a few extra cents for my food/beverages/etc. in order to cover the merchants' extra cost of biodegradable packaging.

Styrofoam is a human health and environmental concern that should be completely removed from our world. This ban would be another step toward living and working toward a sustainable world. I greatly support a ban on Styrofoam.

We researched this stuff in my environment science class this year and it is truely hazardous to the environment. Any person who is serious about going green will stop using it and sign this petition. Thank you so much for taking this responsibility, our Earth appreciates it! =]

There are so many alternatives that are less harmful to our planet and our health. With all of the knowledge out there, we should no longer be using styrofoam especially as disposable packaging.

Alternatives to styrofoam are readily available and are used all over the Bay Area. I'm willing to pay a small additional amount to make this possible. In addition, banning styrofoam in Pacifica would help us keep our beautiful beaches clean.
