Support Health Insurance Fibromyalgia Coverage

Target:
State Insurance Commissioner, Attorney General, Secretary of Health & other key decision-makers
Sponsored by:

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common, chronic widespread pain conditions in the United States. It affects an estimated 6 million people, 2-5 percent of the U.S. adult population. Women are approximately nine times more likely to develop Fibromyalgia than men and symptoms typically appear between the ages of 20-55. In an effort to ensure and protect patient access to approved medical treatments, the American Medical Association (AMA) is developing a Health Insurer Code of Conduct that develops clear and concise principles to address medical care policies, payment issues and monitor compliance of health care insurers.

The American Pain Foundation (APF) stands behind the AMA in support of a Health Insurer Code of Conduct. Often times, pain patients, particularly those who suffer from chronic widespread pain conditions like Fibromyalgia are the most affected by restrictive practices of the managed care industry that undermine the integrity of doctor-patient relationships.

The following petition is designed to harness the collective support of the Fibromyalgia community, including patients, providers, family members and friends, to help patients receive access to all treatments for this painful condition, including FDA-approved Fibromyalgia medications.

Please join with APF in sending an important message to key state government decision makers. Help Fibromyalgia patients receive comprehensive insurance coverage. Your state health care insurers need to improve access and affordability for all Fibromyalgia treatment options. Saving the health of Fibromyalgia patients living with pain is not something that we need to do, it is something that we MUST do.

Petition to Support Comprehensive Coverage for Fibromyalgia Patients

We the undersigned Fibromyalgia patients, health care providers and advocates, support the use of and equal access to all Fibromyalgia treatments. We advocate for affordable, comprehensive insurance coverage for patients suffering unjustly from chronic pain conditions. We urge state officials to re-evaluate restrictive policies currently implemented by health care insurers. We strongly believe that any arduous restrictions on the appropriate treatment of Fibromyalgia do nothing more than hurt patients, prolong healing and further erode the physician/patient relationship.

We also urge leaders to encourage the following.

  • Access for appropriate treatments that include:
    o All FDA-approved Fibromyalgia medications
o All complementary and alternative medicines, such as acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic services
    o Evidence-based recommendations
  • Remove barriers to Fibromyalgia treatment, including:
    o Unnecessary step therapy protocols
o Forced off-label prescribing for providers by health insurance companies
    o Tiered co-pays for medications

An estimated 6 million Americans suffer from chronic pain as a result of their Fibromyalgia diagnosis. This disease disproportionately affects the female population. An estimated 80-90 percent of patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.

The Cost of Fibromyalgia
Chronic widespread pain from Fibromyalgia often results in poor quality of life and poses a financial burden on patients, often causing an inability to work and earn income. Healthcare costs range from $12-$14 billion per year and account for a loss of 1-2 percent of overall U.S. productivity.

Promoting the health of Fibromyalgia patients living with pain is not something that we need to do, it is something that we MUST do.

Dorothy Marie Winke...I have gotten Myofacialpain/Fibromyalgia after my second car accident in 6 years..neither my fault..yet I have to deal with the pain and financial hardship. The second nearly killing me since is was a rear end accident with a fully loaded semi going 55-60 mph...and ending up over my car. I am not able to now have a life and am only in my 40's...yet if I were able to be able to have the medical help I need, that I don't have because of financial problems..I just may be able to move forward and back home to Colorado...Just an AWFUL invisible disease that no one should have to deal with...we all need help..thanks for listening!!! dottie winke

I am very interested in gaining more awareness on fibromyalgia treatment and medicating. I also want a better understanding of this condition to the insurance companies, physicians and public.

10 years ago, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia & was forced to leave a career I loved . I now live each day with chronic pain, am unable to sleep and suffer horribly from the other symptoms of this horrible disease. In spite of this, I have to fight with the insurance companies and doctors for relief, mostly because the doctors are scared to death to prescribe anything for pain. PLEASE HELP!!!

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia first by a homeopathic doctor. A few weeks later, my arthritis physician said that I had fibromyalgia. I can not describe the pain that it has caused both of my legs, it is kind of like a consuming pain. I work in healthcare and when I came down with this kind of pain, it was nothing like the low back pain, joint pain, or arthritis pain that I have. I hope that this will be covered under health insurance. I know of people whose doctors said it was just in their minds but fortunately, my doctor seems to have a better grasp of fibromyalgia. The pain is for real and is the weirdest pain that I have ever expreienced. I am also a cancer survivor and I understand pain. Please have health care support fibromyalgia. Thank you.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1977, chronic fatigue syndrome in 1990 and fibromyalgia shortly thereafter. I have been living with pain for 32 years. Please make our health care as painless and comprehensive as possible.

Men may be hesitant to approach their healthcare provider to discuss these sorts of "sensitive issues" without targeted messaging and dedicated support from a loved one or family member. Men are raised to believe that big boys don't cry. They are told to "shake it off" and to "take it like a man." Showing pain or fatigue is showing weakness for many men. Fibromyalgia does not shake off. Fibromyalgia does not give up. It does not stop for anyone, or anything. Fibromyalgia in men causes absenteeism and presenteeism issues in the workplace, relationship/family troubles at home, and struggles with pain, fatigue, GI disorders, and headaches. Fibromyalgia presents challenges for men as sufferers of the condition, but also as caregivers for the women and loved ones in their lives.

I suffer from the pain of fibromyalgia every day of my life. Every day is a struggle to get out of bed, to go to work, to go on, period. Getting appropriate health care and pain management is also a struggle, due to poor attitudes about narcotic pain medication for chronic conditions. I wish I could show those making these life altering decisions exactly how I feel every day. They deserve to know.

I expect to to helped and treated like a human being when needed. I expect more doctors to know and understand what people with Fibromyaliga are going through and the daily battles we fight.

One of the insurance choices at UAB is using only UAB M.D.s for lower costs. This almost got me killed when the UAB heart doctor made the assumption that all my problems were mental or "just fibro related" and ignored the refering UAB internist's reason for referal. When I was able to change insurance at the end of the year, I was almost disabled from the heart problem. By going out side the UAB system, I was able to be diagnosed at the premier heart clinic and am recovering. Insurance has been able to make people miserable more so with HMO than those not covered by any insurance.

I have suffered with this disease since 1995. It is criminal how people with this disease are treated. America has let us fall through the cracks with little hope of a better life

My mother was diagnosed with fibromyalgia over 10 years ago when they really didn't know much about it and many doctors belived that it wasnt even a real medical condition!!! I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 4 years ago at the age of 22. You know its really sad that even after so many years that most medical doctors in todays society still don't belive or recognize fibromyalgia as a real condition!!! I also have degenerative disk disease, 5 bulging disk with nerve compression in my back and arthritis in my spine...and I have to say the pain from the fibromyalgia is so debilatating and widespread through my whole body, muscles and all my joints, the achy pain is excrutiating that is probably what hurts the worst..I have done massage on a regular bases (as my mother is a massage therapist, and works on me often,) Ive done the stretching excersices, Ive done the heat and ice thing, I have taken the over the counter NSAIDS, and NONE of it really relives the pain it helps Yes, but the only treatment I have truly found that works is YES the treatment with Narcotic meds, which many DR.s sadly belive will not relive the pain of fibromyalgia but narcotic meds (such as Oxycodone) are the only real thing that works for my Fibromyalgia pain, unfortunatley in todays messed up society and the medical world the use of narcotic meds is being banned by many, many, doctors and medical establishments are even going as far as to ban patients who are on narcotic meds for chronic pain, saying that anyone on narcotic pain meds may NOT be seen by any of their physcians and are NOT welcome in their medical establishment. (Which is discrimination!)It is really so very sad that it is coming to this, People on narcotic pain meds who are using it for TRUE chronic pain (such as fibromyalgia) RARLEY ever get addicted as the studies PROVE and if it truly helps the benifits of narcotic med use definently outweighs the risk of addiciton. I would really like to Advocate the use of Narcotic Meds for fibromyalgia patients and wish the more DR.S would recongnize that Yes these meds work for the treatment of fibromyalgia pain and should be used and prescribed for this condition.
