Tell Wal-Mart to stop the sale of whale meat in Japan!

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, owns 95.1% of the Japanese supermarket chain Seiyu. Seiyu is a key distributor of cetacean products in hundreds of its supermarkets in Japan. As one of Japan's leading supermarket chains, Seiyu's distribution chain has helped to maintain the Japanese whale and dolphin hunting industry in spite of the international ban on commercial whaling and repeated international criticism.

Through their business relationship with Seiyu, Wal-Mart has become, knowingly or not, a supporter of the whaling and drive fisheries industries in Japan. Wal-Mart is a silent accomplice in the cruel slaughter of thousands of whales and dolphins each year.

Below is the letter to Wal-Mart:

We the undersigned,

We would first like to thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

We are concerned with your companies presumed support of the illegal Japanese whale hunt. Being a major holder in  Seiyu Supermarkets you are directly supporting slaughter for profit. We encourage you to use your position to end the shale of whale and dolphin products and in return ending the support of the illegal whaling industry. They slaughter the whales in the name of "scientific research", however it is well known that the cetaceans can be studied using non lethal scientific techniques. In addition Japan is targeting endangered species like the Fin whale.

Whales suffer unimaginable and often prolonged deaths when struck by grenade-bearing harpoons from whaling ships and thousands of dolphins are forced into the shallows and butchered annually as part of Japan's drive fisheries. These brutal facts are the basis upon which an international ban on commercial whaling was passed and people across the globe continue to decry Japan's treatment and exploitation of marine mammals.

There are also valid concerns about the consumption of cetacean products. Studies have found extremely high levels of mercury and other neuro-toxins in whale meat that could cause permanent damage to the human nervous system. Inadequate government oversight and public health information means that most Japanese people have no idea of the risks they are taking when they eat cetacean products.

We will be calling for a boycott of Wal-Marts until the sale of cetacean products ceases. The products being sold are not even widely sought out by  Japanese consumers, hence there will be little loss in profit, only the saving of the lives of thousands of cetaceans.
