The illegal hunting of migratory birds on Zakynthos, Greece

Annually thousands of migrating birds are shot on the Greek island of Zakynthos, for no more than sport! The locals are notorious for shooting anything that flies -including endangered species - despite its illegality.

The Ionian islands are a very important flight path and stronghold for various migratory and resident birds. The rich vegetation and lush climate provides the ideal stopover for birds following their breeding routes between Northern Europe and Africa.

The hunting of migratory birds in the breeding season is strictly forbidden by European law, EU Wild Birds Directive 79/409 EEC, and yet the enforcement of such laws is poorly managed.

Please help us to stop this illegal practise NOW.
We the undersigned urge the EU to enforce the Bonn Convention and the European Directive EU79/409 on the Conservation of Wild Birds, by putting pressure on the Greek government to take immediate action to legally enforce this Wild Bird Directive.

Many thanks for your time and consideration on this important issue.
