A certain plastic surgeon in Wilmington, NC displays a nearly permanent image on a billboard of a woman clad in black lingerie offering herself up to the surgeon's knife. This miserable image is generally located near Trader Joe's on Oleander and South College Road. The billboard has been up so many years one hardly notices it - until one day when your ten year old son says "Mommy, is that a prostitute?"
Your mind goes blank. You come up with something clever and reply. "No, that's a woman so insecure she is willing to get sliced up to look better. Isn't that silly?"
Then your eight year old daughter asks, "is someone going to slit her throat because she is ugly?" Your mind goes blank again. Your twelve year old son interjects, "She is probably going to get her boobs cut open and have balloons stuck in them." The ten year old asks, "Do boobs pop if you stab them?"
Your little girl screams, "Mommy, is that going to happen to me? I don't want to get cut up because I'm ugly or popped with a knife!!! " The boys can't stop laughing.
I drove my daughter back and forth through this intersection for years to bring her to preschool. What was she thinking? What was I thinking? I am finally writing this to get rid of the obscene picture we are all subjected to in Wilmington, NC. Please sign and get this horrible picture off our streets.
