Minnesota Higher Education Choice

To make a long story short, my mother graduated from Boston University and I was thrilled when I found out that they had an online education program, being that, I live in Minnesota and I'm quite settled. I'm not in a place to pack up my things and leave. I called Boston University and they said that they offer mostly graduate programs online. Their undergraduate classes did not fit what I was looking for. So I looked into the next best thing, University of Massachusetts. Then I saw on their website, that due to government regulations, Minnesota residents were not eligible to sign up, but were more than welcome to come in person.

I called the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and asked them about this. They said that that the University of Massachusetts was not on their list of approved schools. This is their list of schools they "approve" outside of the MNSCU (Minnesota State College and University) system: http://www.ohe.state.mn.us/sPages/licRegInsts.cfm#N

In sections .658 and .69 of the Minnesota Statute 136A, there are concerns over fees. Which would make one lead to a money trail. Encroaching on freedom of choice to fill the treasury is wrong. If someone chooses a MNSCU school, more power to them. If they do not and the State of Minnesota doesn't receive any money out of it, then so be it.

It is unjust for the state of Minnesota to tell anyone where they can or cannot go for their education. Freedom should be valued more than money.

Dear Minnesota State Legistlature,

Minnesota residents should have the right to choose whatever online education institution that they see fit. It is an encroachment on liberty to tell residents that they cannot go to the online education of their choice.

While Minnesota Statute 136A.61-71 was put in as a protective measure; it does more harm than good. The state of Minnesota is essentially saying that they do not trust their citizens to make their own choices about their education. America was built on freedom. With great freedom, comes great responsibility. If adults in Minnesota are trusted to make decisions about who to elect to represent them, then surely, they can be trusted to make the best decision about where to go to school.

In conclusion, I ask that you repeal Minnesota State 136A.61-71 because it is an encroachment on freedom. Thank you.
