Congress: Don't Pass Legislation Designed to Humiliate Food Stamp Recipients

  • by: A. Ward

Republican Senator David Vitter (LA) is seeking to pass legislation designed to humiliate food stamp recipients at the checkout counter. It’s hard enough for most recipients to pull their food stamp card out at the register knowing that judgmental and prying eyes of other customers are zeroed in on them. But to force them to lengthen the process by having to undergo an identity check is unnecessary and cruel!

There is no statistical data to indicate this legislation will prevent fraud. Food Stamp Cards can only be used if the user has the pin number just like any other debit card. In addition, many food stamp recipients are homebound and must depend on other people to do their grocery shopping for them.

The lunacy of attacking poor people with every piece of legislation greedy minds can conjure must stop in America. Whatever happened to the Statue of Liberty sentiment “Give us your poor, your tired…?”

Please tell Congress not to pass this humiliating piece of legislation.

Attn: United States Congress

House Republican's are once again trying to find ways to punish poor American's. This time it's by requiring food stamp recipients to show photo id at the grocery store check out line. Using food stamps is a humiliating experience all by itself. The prying, judgmental eyes, and people taking note of what kind of food is purchased makes the experience traumatic for many. In addition, many food stamp recipients are disabled and must depend on others to do their shopping for them.

There is no statistical data indicating that this legislation is necessary. Food Stamp cards already have pin numbers to prevent unauthorized use. The Republican party are the first members of the House to say they want less government, less legislation. Why doesn't it apply to the weakest and neediest among us?

We (the undersigned) respectfully ask you to reach into your heart and do all you can to keep your fellow American's from having to endure further humiliation simply because they are poor and in need.

Sincerely,
