Urgent! Close La Jolla, California Harbor Seal Rookery during Pupping Season!

Purpose of petitionTo demonstrate to the California Coastal Commission a broad world-wide base of support to close Casa Beach in La Jolla during the winter harbor seal pupping season.

*Of the 17 mainland California harbor seal rookeries, Casa Beach is one of only two rookeries which do not have restrictions to human access during the critical winter pupping season.

*Beach closure will allow newborn pups to be born in peace, to bond with their mothers, nurse, and learn essential survival skills, which are crucial 6 weeks later when the pups are weaned and on their own. Closure will help prevent premature births, abandoned pups, pup mortality and mother and pup malnutrition.

*Casa Beach is the only birthing area south of Ventura County, 160 mi. away.  It is a special place to see animals in their natural habitat.

*Despite the 70 miles of beach in San Diego, special interest groups demand that human access privilege supersedes all other considerations, including disturbing the mothers and newborn pups.

*Your signature will count towards supporting the necessary habitat security needed by these vulnerable marine mammals.

The California Coastal Commission will vote on pupping season closure at their August 14 meeting, so your signature on this petition is urgent!
