Hunter Spanjer, a 3-year-old deaf boy, was told by his preschool that he needs to change the way he signs his name because his sign looks like "shooting a gun".
Hunter Spanjer uses the standard Signing Exact English or S.E.E., crossing his index and middle fingers and waving them a little to communicate to others what his name is.
Grand Island Public Schools' prohibits any "instrument" that looks like a weapon for safety reasons. However, this is a child's name, and is not threatening in any way.
Please tell Grand Island Public Schools' to reconsider their policy and let Hunter sign his name!
Dear Grand Island Public Schools,
Recently, you all told deaf Hunter Spanjer that he could not sign his name using Signing Exact English or S.E.E. because it "resembles shooting a gun". However, a three-year-old signing his name is not threatening.
Please change the policy prohibiting Hunter from signing his name.
Keep up the great work. Look what you've accomplished!
