I support lower school taxes in Hastings for several reasons. Among them:
Ourschool taxes went up by nearly 50% over the past 5 years, while the number of students went down by about 8%.
Thecurrent level of school taxes imposes a severe hardship on many residents.
Hastings can offer good schools for significantly less than the $27,500 per student we're currently spending.
Note: You can sign the petition without displaying your name on the website, but your name will still appear on the printed petition submitted to Dr. Shaps and members of the Hastings School Board.

After living in Hastings for 22 years, we are seriously considering leaving because of the tax burden.

The schools look like hell onvacations and weekends..28% consewrvation of energy when shades are down...Home buyers see the sloppy look of the school...this is relatively trivial but symtomatic of the disregard of citizen/taxpayers requests.... I urge the board to get rid of the poor teachers and let the stars teach bigger classes

As a retired teacher who taught in the New York City public schools for forty years, I understand the importance of a solid, comprehensive, academic education. However, it is not necessary to offer every sports activity on the planet. Additionally, while basic arts education promote critical thinking skills and are esentially to good academic education, electives like photography, advanced painting or sculpting, a variety of bands and/or orchestras are excesses for which Hasting tax payers can no longer afford to pay. Some of those studies are best left to advanced studies in professional institutions/colleges and/or private instruction. Let's face it how many professional basketball players or musicians or artist have Hastings' schools produced? Money would be much better spent preparing students to enter the 21 century work force than fun and games.

I am thirthy-five years resident of Hastings. Our taxes exceeds Scardale's taxes .This is outrageous and punitive.
Many people have moved out of Hastings for this particular reason.
I am pleased that someone has raise this issue rather everyone being too embrassed to point out this injustice

The real estate taxes are becoming a heavier burden than the mortgages.
Also, many houses are not renovated because of the fear of large tax re-assessments.

So many people who live in Hastings are retired and live on a fixed income. Increasing taxes will not only place an unconscionable burden on them, but may also drive them out of the area.

It's disgraceful that our taxes are so high. When everyone I know is making less money, our schools are employing 4 FULL TIME psychologists and other unneeded salaried personnel who will be receiving no cost and increasing pensions and healthcare for the remainder of their lives. Are we crazy? Do we all have to move out of this village we call home?

As a Senior Citizen I would like to see the School Board adopt the Sudbury, Massachusetts model for addressing taxes for elderly homeowners. This model allows for Seniors to delay paying their taxes until after they or their heirs dispose of their home, thus allowing them to stay in their homes without the burden of onerous taxes. --- Jack Gavin

Our wonderful schools are losing their value as the cost to run them rises beyond reason. Meanwhile our home values are falling, and our Blue Ribbon status is not attracting the buyers for the 75 homes currently on the market.

I am a lifelong resident of Hastings and the taxes are becoming increasingly unwieldy. I have spoken to people for whom the taxes have actually been a deterrent to moving here, and they chose to live elsewhere. This is not a situation or reputation that helps our community.

At the same time our village is considering ways to build more mandated "affordable housing", the school taxes are making more (if not most) housing in Hastings unaffordable, especially for middle income families and seniors. We need to apply some common-sense cutbacks to keep our village diverse.

Please look into other options rather than burdening the tax paying residents of Hastings further. My husband and I had to take a pay cut to keep our jobs, I can't afford another tax hike. Maybe the school district should freeze all pay raises or take a pay cut themselves until this economy gets better.
