Let Onion Receive Compassionate Care While He Awaits His Fate

  • by: Animal Welfare Blogger

Animal advocates are fighting for a mastiff-Rhodesian dog named Onion who has spent more than a year in solitary confinement at a city shelter while lawyers fight over his fate.  For more than 365 days Onion has lived without human touch or the ability to exercise or take a walk outdoors.

Dogs are social creatures and it is cruel and inhumane to keep Onion alone without human contact for this long.  Onion needs to be afforded time each day to be exercised in the secure grassy area of the shelter and time to spend in the company of a skilled and caring human.

Dear Mayor Hafen and Henderson City Council Members,

We, the undersigned ask that you provide Onion, the dog with compassionate and humane care while he is still under your authority.  We think the living conditions that keep Onion in solitary confinement 24 hours a day are inhumane.

We ask that Onion be allowed to be walked, exercised and receive physical touch from a skilled and caring animal care worker on a daily basis.  We also ask that Onion be allowed to exercise outdoors in the secure grassy area of the Henderson Animal Shelter once a day, when other dogs are not present.

We believe these two changes will make Onion's stay more comfortable and humane and not cause him to become "cage crazy" from confinement.

We also ask that you allow a representative from Nevada Voters for Animals to check in on Onion periodically.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
