Make Our Voices Heard!! Demand PBCSD Keep SAC 309 in Calusa Boundaries!

This Thursday, September 22nd, the Advisory Boundary Committee
will be holding a meeting to discuss possible school boundary changes for Calusa Elementary. One of the areas proposed to move is SAC 309, which includes the neighborhoods of Hidden Lake, Hidden Valley, Boca Preserve, Royal Poinciana, Boca Villa Apts, Sunflower Condo, Banyan Courts Condo, Boca Highlands, Banyan Park Condo, and Tres Vida Condo. There are two plans being proposed:

- Plan #1 will keep SAC 309 at Calusa and will move other SACS to a school with an equal rating.

- Plan #2 will send SAC 309 to Pine Grove in Delray Beach.

Below are the statistics for both schools:

Calusa Elementary:

- Rating: 9 out of 10
- White: 63%, Hispanic: 22%, Black: 8%, Asian 5%
- Students participating in a free or reduced-price lunch: 27%
- Located in a safe area in Boca Raton (Clint Moore and Military)
- Offers Gifted Program and other enrichment programs

Pine Grove Elementary:

- Rating: 4 out of 10
- Black: 81%, Hispanic: 15%, White: 4%
- Students participating in a free or reduced-price lunch: 98%
- Located in Delray Beach off of NW 10th Street
- The school is over 50 years old. The AC goes out weekly, leaky valves have shut down bathrooms and doors have failed to close and lock properly.

As you can see by the school statistics above, it makes no sense to move a Boca Raton neighborhood in a 9 Rated school to a Delray Beach 4 rated school. Many people move to Boca Raton because of the great schools. If our neighborhood is zoned for a 4 rated school in Delray Beach, this will greatly affect our home values. This affects EVERYONE, whether you have children or not.

What can you do?

Dear The Advisory Boundary Committee, Frank Barbieri, and Robert Avossa,

The following pages are signatures that have been collected in opposition to Proposal C-2 of the proposed boundary change for Calusa Elementary School.

Many people are very upset about the proposed boundary change. Our children are currently in a rated 9 school in the city that we live AND pay taxes in. We believe it is unjust to send our children to a 4 rated school in Delray Beach, while allowing children in Delray Beach to go to a Boca Raton School (SAC 296C & 295B). Out of both proposals (C-1 and C-2), SAC 309 is the only zone that will be negatively impacted. Every other zone will go to another school of equal excellence.

As you can see from the comments, many people moved to these neighborhoods to go to a Boca Raton school. If proposal C-2 is passed, our home values will plummet and many people will leave the neighborhood.

Please understand how this will affect our children, our neighborhood and our city. Our futures rely on you making the right decision. Please don’t let us down!

Thank You,

SAC 309

Update #17 years ago
Thank you everyone for your support by signing this petition. Last weeks meeting was packed with very unhappy parents from all of the nieghborhoods affected by these proposed changes. The board has decided to go back to the drawing board and will be releasing their new plan mid October, with a meeting to follow on October 18th at 6:30pm. Our SAC, 309, will most likely be part of the new proposals. We need to stay vigilant and on top of this.
