Stop U.S. Thermal Coal Exports through BC Ports

  • by: Communities And Coal
  • recipient: Petition to the Federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, BC Members of Parliament, BC Municipal Councillors, Metro Vancouver Directors, Port Metro Vancouver, President and CEO.

Fraser Surrey Docks hopes to construct a Direct Transfer Coal Facility to ship up to 8 million metric tonnes of American thermal coal through B.C. annually. This coal will be transported via rail by our homes, schools, and farms, multiple times a day. If this happens, British Columbia will become the largest coal exporter in all of North America. There are many reasons to be alarmed and to take action.

These shipments may bring to White Rock, Surrey, Delta, and New Westminster:

● Serious Health effects from Diesel Particulate Matter and Coal Dust such as cancer, and respiratory illness

● Increase in train noise

● The increased possibility of derailments and devastating spillage

● Potential to block emergency response at Crescent Beach and other beach  access points.

● Crossing hazards such as death

● Potential of Property Value Decline

● Increase in Foundation Vibration

Join your community in rejecting all US Thermal Coal Shipments which travel through many lower mainland communities here in BC.  By signing this petition you will be sending a clear message to your City Councillors, MLA, and MP that we as a community do not support these Thermal Coal Shipments.  Our mission is to stop all US Thermal Coal Shipments in order to protect our families from the hazards they will bring.

Please share this with your family and friends!

Stop U.S. Thermal Coal Exports from British Columbia Ports

Whereas both the coal terminal proposal for Fraser Surrey Docks (FSD) and the continuing transportation of coal by rail endanger our immediate environment (air and water), threaten personal health (from coal dust, diesel particulate matter, and mercury), and endanger the planet:

I am opposed to the FSD proposal to build a Direct Transfer Coal Facility on the Fraser River and the export of Thermal Coal from BC Ports and hereby demand that the above parties undertake all available efforts to oppose it.

I also demand that any proposal for expanded coal exports of any kind include:

* A Comprehensive Health Impact Assessment (as recommended by Chief Medical Health Officer for Fraser Health, Dr. Paul Van Buynder)  for all communities and areas impacted by coal shipments, and
* A Complete and Meaningful Public Hearing related to proposed existing coal export
