UK: Increase Funding for Domestic Violence Shelters!

Battered women in the UK are in danger due to a lack of funding and ill-conceived regulations for safe houses. Specialized domestic violence shelters born out of the women's movement in the 1970s are being defunded in favour of facilities that serve males and independent accommodations provided by housing authorities.

Women are 89% more likely than males to be repeat victims of domestic violence. They need a safe space where they can share their feelings with other women who have gone through similar experiences. This place must be free of males whose presence is threatening to vulnerable women and interferes with their healing process. And yet the UK is setting time limits on how long women can stay in safe homes, and cutting funding for homes that don't also serve males.

The UK is sending women's rights back 40 years and forcing women to live on the streets or move back in with their abusers. Please sign the petition to urge the UK government to increase funding for domestic violence shelters!

We, the undersigned, are concerned that the UK's battered women are in danger due to a lack of funding and ill-conceived regulations for safe houses. As you know, specialized domestic violence shelters born out of the women's movement in the 1970s are being defunded in favour of facilities that serve males and independent accommodations provided by housing authorities.
