Sveriges regering har återigen beslutat om jakt på landets vargar. Enligt forskningsrapporten ”Metapopulation effective size and conservation genetic goals for the Fennoscandian wolf (Canis lupus) population”, krävs minst en genetiskt effektiv storlek på 500 hos en starkt sammanhängande population för att vargstammen på den Fennoskandiska halvön ska kunna betraktas som livskraftig. Omsatt i faktiskt antal djur innebär det ungefär 2000 vargar över området. Om 2018 års inplanerade licensjakt på 22 vargindivider sätts i verket, därtill eskalerande antal skyddsjakter samt en växande illegal jakt – så innebär detta sammantaget en förödelse för Sveriges vargar. Sverige har idag en population på ca 300 vargar. En fortsatt jakt kan således bli slutet för vargens existens i Sverige. Vargen är ett rödlistat, fridlyst djur och är skyddad enligt EU:s Art- och Habitatdirektiv. Trots detta fortsätter Sverige att tillåta licensjakt. EU-kommissionen har vid upprepade tillfällen påpekat att Sveriges vargpopulation ej uppfyller kraven för gynnsam bevarandestatus. Jakten måste därför anses som illegal. Vid jakten utsätts vargarna för extrem stress. Sverige tillåter jakt på varg med high-tech utrustning, motorfordon och på jägarnas begäran infördes dessutom, som enda land i världen, löshundsjakt.
