Support Motion to Condemn Islamophobia and Protect Canadian Muslims!

In December, Iqra Khalid introduced M-103 to Canadian Parliament. Though not a formal bill, just a motion, it asks the government "to condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination.” It also requests an open investigation of the hate crimes - Khalid believes, rightfully, that the issue should be studied. This way, the Canadian government can find tangible solutions to keep Muslim people safe.

A Muslim-Canadian woman herself, she passed the bill in response to growing anti-Muslim sentiment. Recently, a white terrorist killed six Muslims in their local mosque in Quebec City. And this act of violence is a part of a horrific pattern of hatred against the religious group.

After the motion was announced, lies spread across the internet, calling it a way to "make any criticism of Islam illegal in Canada." These lies come from the far right-wing, and are clearly false. The motion is simply intended to protect an increasingly vulnerable minority group from more harm and hatred. In the age of Donald Trump's disgustingly racist rhetoric, this is critical.

From 2012 to 2014, hate crimes against Muslims more than doubled in Canada, according to Statistics Canada figures. Muslims across the country are reporting feeling less and less safe. Almost 70,000 Canadians recently signed a petition that brought attention to a "notable rise in anti-Muslim sentiments in Canada."

It is time the Canadian government formally support Muslims and make sure they are as safe as other religious groups. Sign now to let Canadian Parliament know: we support M-103 and the protection of Muslims in Canada!

Dear [Decision maker],

I am writing in support of M-103, the motion introduced by Iqra Khalid in December. The motion asks the government "to condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination.” It also requests an open investigation of the hate crimes - Khalid believes, rightfully, that the issue should be studied. I urge you to support the motion so the Canadian government can find tangible solutions to keep Muslim people safe.
