STOP COUNCIL MOVING WAR MEMORIAL

Swan Hill Rural City Council has advertised that they are going to move a War Memorial dedicated to the Hutchins family, a family in which only 3 out of 7 returned home from World War 2.

The City Council of Swan Hill has proposed to move a Stone Plaque to Woorinen, a small town with the population of 371 (ABS 2011), 12km away from Swan Hill and the previous hometown of the Hutchins family during the war. The plaque should not be moved to the small rural town of Woorinen as it is a small country town with no tourism locations. On the other hand, Swan Hill is a thriving town with a large catalog of tourism destinations along with a population of 9,684 (ABS 2006). The current location of the memorial is at Riverside Park which is an amazing spot, surrounded by a large water feature and ponds (which is inhabited by a number of ducks and ducklings), it is right on the bank of the Murray River and is on a popular walking path which leads to an outdoor gym area.

The main concern is due to vandalism. The instant they are referring to is scratches made to a photo of the family on the aluminum plaque. Although this is a valid reason for relocation, the marks have been there for roughly 9 years, roughly 12 months after the stone memorial was erected. Therefore this argument is invalid.

The local council has not wanted to hear a word about our concerns and reasonings to leave the plaque in its rightful spot along the popular riverbank. We have also stated that a daughter of one of the Hutchins brothers is willing to pay for a new plaque and have it fully restored, leaving the council having no expenses whatsoever.

This is distressing for the members of the Hutchins family who are wanting the locals and tourists of Swan Hill to continue paying their respects to the Hutchins family.
Please sign our petition to show the Council that we are wanting to keep the plaque in Swan Hill, and not in Woorinen. You can also contact Swan Hill council directly at www.swanhill.vic.gov.au/yoursay or at council@swanhill.vic.gov.au
