STOP Carrying Guns in restaurants, shops, and businesses in DeSoto, Texas

Big Dreams, Big Plans. That is the tagline used on the city's website to promote Desoto as the place to nurture dreams. As a resident of Desoto, I believe that one's dreams can take shape and be realized in this city - a city where families can feel safe and where we can all claim pride in being residents of a great city. However, the recent passage of the open carry law creates an environment where our safety and peace of mind are threatened.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, seven in 10 active shootings are in schools and businesses. In addition, gun violence kills far more Americans than even terrorism (Source: FBI/CNN, Dec. 2015)! Put simply, which many studies have shown, the presence of a gun at the scene of conflict exacerbates that conflict and makes those involved more aggressive than if no gun is present—this increase in aggression exists even for those who are not planning any violence and those who are not in direct possession of the weapon.
This reality turned to fear as I walked the aisles of the Walmart store on Beltline in DeSoto where I witnessed a man in the store with a gun on his hip. Yes, it was in a holster in accordance with the law, but walking directly behind him were small children and their family. Is this what we want our children and families to witness and experience in Desoto? Do we want people carrying guns in the same places where our children and families share meals, conduct business and shop? And, as studies have shown, what if a conflict arises and gun fire ensues - in the midst of our children and our families? The reality of this potential is far too overwhelming!
If this is a reality you don't want in Desoto, please sign this petition asking DeSoto businesses and those visiting DeSoto to do the following.
STOP – Carrying weapons in DeSoto businesses, restaurants and shops.
START – Posting “no guns allowed” signs on the entrance of businesses, restaurants and shops.
