WE WON! The Broadway League has reversed its decision and will now ask theaters to dim their lights in honor of Joan Rivers on Sept. 9 at 6:45 p.m. This is amazing -- less than 24 hours after launching the petition, we gathered more than 5,370 signatures, were featured in the AP and The New York Times, AND we won! Please continue to sign the petition to thank the Broadway League and show your support of the legendary Joan Rivers! Thank you all so much for your support!
Dimming the lights on theater marquees on Broadway is an industry honor reserved for actors who have passed. But a committee has decided not to extend the honor to Joan Rivers. Sign the petition to tell Broadway to reverse its decision and dim the lights for the legendary Joan Rivers!
Joan Rivers was a Tony-nominated actress. Although she hadn't appeared on Broadway in recent years, she was a great champion to our community. Her contributions were so huge and so well known there is barely a need to state them.
On Sept. 8, a committee of the Broadway League, which represents theater owners and producers, decided against honoring Joan Rivers this way, claiming she doesn't meet the committee's "criteria."
Not dimming the lights will be a blemish on the entire Broadway community that will never go away. We implore Broadway to reverse its decision and show our beloved legend the respect she deserves!
"If you don't go to Broadway, you're a fool. On Broadway, off Broadway, above Broadway, below Broadway, go! Don't tell me there isn't something wonderful playing. If I'm home in New York at night, I'm either at a Broadway or an Off Broadway show. We're in the theater capital of the world, and if you don't get it, you're an idiot." - Joan Rivers
Broadway League: We implore you to show Joan Rivers the respect she deserves and honor her contributions to the Broadway community by dimming the lights in her honor. Please reverse your decision not to honor her!
