Stop Horse-drawn Carriages in Cape Town, South Africa

  • by: Nolene Louw
  • recipient: President Jacob Zuma and Government officials

Worn-out, exhausted and sickening images haunt me every time I drive past a horse-drawn carriage in the city of Cape Town. Despite the public outcry on all animal cruelty subjects, I find that this is the one least attended to.

This is a outcry for the 1000 to 2000 horses forced to pull carriages in the city streets of South Africa. Due to the fact that they are constantly walking and standing on hard streets their hoof's deteriorates and lameness is inevitable, not even mentioning the open and raw wounds on these horses left and right sides due to being whipped by a rod if they are not fully cooperative and so much more risks such as:
          * Weather conditions, extremely hot and bitter cold conditions
          * Smoke and exhaust fumes from traffic
          * In summer horses suffer from heatstroke and dehydration
          * Studies show that horses are not comfortable being between cars and trucks
          * "spooked" horses can cause fatal accidents and injuries among humans and horses

These horses needs your help, they need to be taken off the streets and they need proper medical care in order for them to survive. So please from one animal lover to another please sign this petition and give these horses a proper chance in life!

The following are cities that already has bans on carriage horses and the number is growing:
          * London, Paris, Beijing, Sante Fe, New Mexico, Key West and Florida
