We hereby request the City Council of Beeville to stand united with the Beeville Police Association and be Pro Civil Service. Keeping Civil Service is what the Beeville Police Association wants.
The Civil Service process establishes a system which evaluates performance, ensures fair and objective rights, and bases promotions on rankings and lists. The current system has protected men and women, people of color, and veterans from discrimination. In addition, Civil Service has ensured that public employees can excel in public service based on their talent and dedication rather than political connections. The proposed banding system would eviscerate these protections and open up greater patronage and favoritism at all levels of City government.
To make matters worse, the Commission has not scheduled one public hearing on these changes. A single hearing denies people who wish to offer comments or ask questions in person if they do not live in Beeville or don’t have the ability to take off work to come in and speak to the council. A rule change this serious and damaging shouldn’t be done without discussion or based off personal opinions.
Please listen to those who your decision effects. The Officers who work here and the citizens who will be affected by politics and personal feelings. The Beeville Police Association request that the Commission schedule additional meeting with members of the Police department which are covered by Civil Service.
