China - Ban Import of Totoaba & Increase Funding For Anti-Wildlife Trafficking Laws

  • by: Sue Lee

The totoaba species of fish is continually in danger of extinction but efforts to protect them are an ongoing, economic issue. This is a predominantly large fish found in the Gulf of California. They spawn in the Colorado River Delta where waters are warmer. However, the totoaba faces a threat because of limited habitat, detrimental to its reproductive success.

Another issue that threatens the existence of this very useful and necessary species of fish is the massive decline in its population. The Totoaba is actually on the Mexican Endangered Species List but fishing for this species is continuing. Diners in China value many components of the fish. We need to take steps in protecting this species.

If we are to encourage the protection of the Totoaba, we are attempting to encourage the Chinese Premier to ban the import of the totoaba and increase funding for enforcement of anti-wildlife trafficking laws. We have to let the Premier know how important the Totoaba is, encouraging aggressive protection for this crucial animal. You can help in our efforts by signing and sharing this petition, putting pressure on the government of China to stop the illegal sales and use of the totoaba.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang – It is crucial that you step up the game and make a more increased effort to make the issue of extinction a top priority. We strongly urge you to ban the import of the totoaba and increase funding for enforcement of anti-wildlife trafficking laws. Please ensure the safety of this fish and stop its possible extinction.
