Recently the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has approved a new genetically modified potato for the Canadian consumer market and has currently stated that the potato will not be labeled as genetically modified on grocery store shelves.
Genetically modified foods have not been proven to be safe for human consumption in any long-term comprehensive study. The European Union has strict guidelines for labelling genetically modified foods so that consumers can make informed choices.
In Canada, however, the CFIA does not want consumers to have a choice. By not labelling they are taking away consumers' ability to make choices based on their own research and preferences. If genetically-modified foods are as safe as the industry proclaims them to be, they should have no problem with the labelling of their products.

As a concerned consumer I urge you to label the new genetically-modified potato, the Innate potato, when it comes to market this fall in Canada.
Consumers have the right to know what they are consuming when they buy it from the grocery store. The European Union labels all its genetically modified foods and Canada should follow suit.
This new potato adds to the list of products on the market that are genetically modified. Despite the fact that there have been no long term studies on the effects of consuming genetically modified foods, Health Canada and the CFIA have not only approved this new potato, but are taking away consumers' rights to access information so that they can make informed choices based on their own research and preferences.
