Stop Shooting Our Bears

Black bears, mothers & cubs, are being killed by Manitoba Wildlife Officials & local authorities during summer months each year in cottage & park areas, according to newspaper reports. Black bears belong to the people of Manitoba, Canada. The people of Manitoba pay Manitoba Wildlife Officials to conserve their wildlife on their behalf: is shooting the people's bears a conservation action? Manitoba Wildlife Officials are reported to believe that bears found in cottage area's & parks pose a danger to public safety. Why do Manitoba Wildlife Officials prefer to kill, rather than relocate adult bears? Published statistics show that Diversionary Feeding Stations for bears have an 88% success rate of keeping bears away from high human traffic areas. Why do Manitoba Wildlife Officials prohibit Rescue, Rehabilitation & Release of Black Bear cubs, when published statistics prove that orphaned bear cubs Rescued, Reared under proper conditions, then released at a suitable time, at a suitable place, is successful and does not create future human/wildlife conflicts? Why is killing the peoples bear cubs & adults considered to be a better option than conserving them by the peoples government?
"If you talk to the animals, they will talk with you and you will know each other. If you do not talk to them, you will not know them and what you do not know, you will fear.  What one fears,
one destroys." - Chief Dan George

We the undersigned have a deep concern for the way Black Bear Management has been handled in the past and we would like to see it changed in the earliest possible time, so that black bears in our province can stay safe and with a better coexistence along side people. We are living in a time with cutting edge technology that affords us the wisdom and insights into black bear behavior, so that we can better understand and react differently to bears and their changing environment.  There are several institutes, agencies and organizations in North America who's bear studies have shown kinder methodologies that conclusively work. We strongly urge you to consider this plea on behalf of all the people of Manitoba and especially on behalf of those who are enjoying our parks and cottages everywhere.  Thankyou for taking the time to read this letter.
