Demand Tony Abbott does not cut funding for wind power projects

  • by: Michael Taylor
  • recipient: Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia

Tony Abbott declared war on renewable energy., and all things green in general it seems. With National symbols like the Great Barrier reef under threat, farms in danger of becoming mines and changing the Renewable Energy Target from 41,000 GWh to 33,000GWh almost guaranteeing that Australia will not fulfil its international renewals capacity obligations of 20% as originally agreed for 2020 - you would think there is not much else he could do to make one think that he is on a collision course with Captain Planet.

Tony Abbott seems to love, dirty energy, and he seems to have no appetite to modernize or clean up Australia’s old, inefficient and dirty power sector. And he has no excuse, using wind power alone, Denmark. can meet all of its electricity needs – with plenty to spare for Germany, Norway and Sweden also.

In a new low however, Tony Abbott has dramatically escalated his war on wind power: the government has ordered the $10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation not to make any new investments in wind power projects.

And despite a warning that this move is putting international investment at risk, not to mention the environment, treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann have issued the so-called green bank with a directive to change its investment mandate, prohibiting new wind funding.

The only real reason given, is that they find Wind Farms ugly. I do find a smoking coal mine much uglier, but Tony Abbott and his cohorts seem to disagree. Nothing looks nicer, or smells better than a fresh coal mine in ones back garden. How awful and unsightly a wind farm looks out in the Australian desert, right in Abbotts view every time he opens up his curtains.

This is a big hit on investment in an industry that has the potential to create hundreds, if not thousands of jobs. But with the message that effectively tells international investors that Australia is not a safe place to do business, he damage this has done is immeasurable. It really is a betrayal of Australian households facing rising power prices and a slap in the face of workers in the renewable energy industry whose jobs are now at risk.

Money and business aside, the environment and Australia needs clean and renewable energy, not only for its international obligations but also for the very future of her eco-system. What Tony Abbott is asking for is less clean energy, and more coal, and more coal means less jobs in clean energy, more pollution, more cancer and more lung disease people.

Common sense says wind farms, Tony Abbott says more coal, the environment says clean energy, Tony Abbott says coal. The Great Barrier Reef says renewable energy, Tony Abbott says dirty energy.

We stand for clean and renwable energy, we stand for a sustainable future for Australia and her people, and there children, Tony Abbott is all about short term gain. Sign this petition with me and lets tell Tony Abbott that we care for our land and her people. We want a future that doesn’t have black smoke on its horizon.

Lets send as firm and loud message to Tony Abbott. Do not cut funding for wind power projects, but encourage it. It just makes sense.
